Unions are just like any other organization with money and influence, they are prone to grow corrupt. Of course without them, the individual worker is basically defenseless and has no barganing clout against their employer. Somewhere, there is a proper balance.

It's unfortunate that disciplinary matters that don't quite have the force of criminal law (but might as well) aren't covered under the Sixth Amendment.

I mean, the article makes it clear, but doesn't come out and say it, that the real problem here is how long it takes for cases to be heard. I don't know if the UFT has the power to try to speed that process up, but surely the Bloomberg administration could do something about it if it actually gave a fuck.

I'm no fan of the UFT, but in general, but I really don't think they're the culprits here, or at least not the only ones.
