Attention: I posted part 7 earlier this day, so make sure that you've read part 7 first, or this chapter will not make sense.

The cold water on his face must have helped. His eyes no longer puffy. Scotty takes a deep breath. He had his cry. Time to move on. Time to get back into the messy situation outside his door. Just as he opens the door, someone tries to knock on it and almost tumbles into the room.

"Kevin!"
"Scotty. You were suddenly gone. I came up here with one of the busses. ... Have you been crying? What's the matter? What happened?" With a concerned face Kevin closes the door and takes Scotty's hand.

"Seriously?" Scotty asks, feeling slightly insulted. How long will Kevin continue to lie to him? But then, of course, he doesn't know that Scotty knows. "When were you going to tell about your fiancé?"
"My what?!" Kevin stunned face doesn't seem acted.

"Your brother... He said that you would accept Chad's proposal...." When he sees nothing but confusion, Scotty explains: "You left to talk to Chad, whoever he is. And your brother said not to worry, that Chad would do anything for you and that you would most likely accept his proposal."

Kevin covers his mouth with his hands to make sure he won't burst into laughter. Scotty is too distressed to get laughed at.
"Scotty... I need you understand this very important thing about Chad and me. We've known each other for years.

I love him. I adore him. I worship him. But I wouldn't marry him a gazillion years. This 'marry me'-thing has been a joke between us for nearly 25 years. And neither of us has accepted the other one's proposal. Yes, I've proposed to him too. Even when I was married to my ex. That joke kept on going between us.

I think if either one of us would ever say yes, the other one would go into cardiac arrest. There was no one else when I met you."
"So, these last few days were not a lie?"
"No."

Kevin leans in to kiss Scotty and Scotty lets him. This time he's the one who needs Kevin to hold him and Kevin kisses his hair.
"Been a bit of a rollercoaster-morning, right?" Kevin asks. He can feel Scotty nod against his chest, so he holds Scotty just a little bit longer.

Eventually however Scotty sits up and straightens his clothes.
"I've been doing some thinking this morning. Do you think that with my experience here I could find a job in Los Angeles?"
"Sure. But why?"

"I want to get to know you better. Maybe I've been to tied to this place and incapable of seeing a different future for myself. I could sell what I have here and maybe move closer to you."
"You would move away? From here? For me?"

"Yes. I could." As Scotty speaks the words he knows that he could do it. For the first time he's convinced that he should make an effort of his own. Kevin is a lawyer, he couldn't just leave. Scotty however, well, his situation is uncertain and maybe it is time for a change.

Kevin laughs. He's clearly surprised and happy. He gives Scotty a warm, thorough kiss that leaves Scotty stunned.
"Is that an 'okay'? A 'yes'? " Scotty asks.
"Not exactly." Kevin answers.

Upon seeing the confusion on Scotty's face he continues:
"That was a 'let's table this discussion for later on'. As in, after I've delivered my message from Chad. Can you gather as much of your staff as possible in one place? I want to reach as many as I can and I don't want to have to explain it 40 times."

*****

"Thank you all for getting here this fast." Kevin starts, as he watches the large group of people that have gathered in the kitchen of Sunny Meadows. "My name is Kevin Walker and I've been asked by the new owner to give you all some more information on the future of this hotel, Sunny Meadows.

The new owner is Chad Berry. And, yes, that is the actor who currently plays Dr Philip in Temptation Bay. He has good memories of this place, when he worked here in his younger years and when he found out that it would be sold, he bought it. As of last week this place is his.

When he made his agreement with Mr Green, he was told that the deal would include the staff of this hotel. He was unaware of any deals being made to move staff over to Mr Green's new hotel. All contracts made under the banner of Sunny Meadows can remain as they were last week. Chad wants to keep them as they are.

This also goes for those who planned to move to the other hotel. Mr Berry is aware that with the new hotel gone, some of you, who had wanted to move to the new hotel will be out of a job and he doesn't wish that on anyone." Kevin can see relief go through the group at the realization that they would have some job-security.

"I have also been informed that Mr Green is now being sought by the police for embezzlement. The accounts for both Sunny Meadows and the new hotel were cleaned out. This means that, for the moment, you cannot receive payment of your wages through the account of Sunny Meadows.

However Mr Berry has vouched that he will take care of this and that you will receive payment as soon as is possible." This earns him a little applause. "He told me to let all of you know that he's proud of the work you've done so far and that he hopes that all of you will continue to work here.

In view of the current situation he has decided to come here sooner than planned. He'll most likely get here tomorrow. I hope he will find this hotel working as well as it always does and that he can see that the faith he has put in this hotel and its staff is not a misplaced one.

With any further questions you can get in touch with either me or Scotty Wandell, but, please, understand that at the moment we cannot give information for each of you individually as we still try to figure out quite a few things ourselves and have quite a task before us.

The 3 most important things I want all of you to understand is: 1. Sunny Meadows is open and will stay open. 2. Your job is still here if you want it. 3. Payment will be done as fast as possible. We're trying the very best we can. Meanwhile, if any of you run into a financial issue, please, let me know. ..Thank you."

As the group disperses, Scotty grabs Kevin by his arm and pulls him away to kiss him.
"Wow! This is such good news! Does that mean I get to keep my job as well?" Scotty asks. Kevin's smile disappears from his face and he looks down at his shoes.
"About that...." he starts.

Scotty lets go of Kevin and takes a step back, bracing himself for bad news.
"Did you know that only 5 people from the staff of Sunny Meadows planned to move to the new hotel? They were all waiting with a reply."

"Waiting? For what? A better deal?"
"No, silly. They wanted to know what you would do. My mom talked to several of you colleagues and the general consensus was that they would go where you're going. They want to work for you."

"Really?" Scotty looks surprised.
"You're very popular. You worked yourself up in this place. They know you, they trust you. You're there for them, so they're here for you. They want to be where you are.

So Chad intends to keep you here, give you more responsibilities and you'll get a wider range of authorization, which will be financially better for you too. Your job will be bigger, but I understand that the new manager Mr Green hired for the new hotel, wasn't such a bad guy and might be able to become your assistent."

"Oh, wow.. I don't know what to say."
"And now I'm going back to what you said to me earlier. Äs much as I love that you would want to move for me, you don't belong in Los Angeles, you belong here. And I think you should stay here."

"So, we will be nothing more than a winter romance?" Scotty understands.
"Not necessarily... Remember that I told you that I wasn't happy with so many things in my life? Well, just before I left Los Angeles to come here, I quit my job, on a whim. I just took a piece of paper and told them that I was done and wouldn't come back.

I was the last one to leave that day, so no one noticed that I walked away with what few personal possessions I had at my office. I had to my leave my plant behind though. Too big to carry. They're not happy with it, claim that the way I quit was unprofessional, and I think they were right, but they have accepted my resignation. They let me go.

Now I may be jobless, but I'm not exactly penniless. My ex had to fork over quite some money for our divorce. He wanted two of our three houses and had to buy me out. And I had a solid income of my own, and never gave myself much time to spend it. So, financially I can do what I want.

And,... I've been thinking that I would like to find out what Sunny Meadows looks like in the spring, summer and autumn. Do you think I could find a place to stay, here in the neighborhood?" Kevin teases, as a big smile spreads of Scotty's face.
"I you don't mind sharing a bed...?" Scotty takes Kevin in his arms.

"Oh, I think I can live with that. As long as it's your bed."
"You really want to move here? For me?"
"Yes. Let's see where this takes us. I don't know if this will be 'eternal love', but let's give this a fair chance to succeed." Kevin answers.

A MONTH LATER

*****

Scotty wakes up because the early sunlight hits his eyes. He can feel that Kevin is close to him, still asleep based on his calm breathing. Scotty cannot remember when he had ever been happier. Everything is running smoothly in his life. The hectic period after the avalanche is behind him.

Chad had come, had seen, had conquered. That man was all charm and he managed to win over the staff from Sunny Meadows within in few minutes. He had kept his promise of payment, so most were very happy with him. He also focused on the guests, some of them had put the shock behind them and had entered the 'anger'-stage, but he calmed them down.

He sat down for endless conversations, watched a million-and-one pictures of (grand)children, listened to countless stories, posed for pictures and selfies, always all smiles and good manners. And after a few days no one wanted to leave anymore, which was quite a relief to Scotty.

It helped that Mr Green got caught when trying to leave the States. With him in prison there was good chance that they would get their money back as well, but that would be a thing for the future, according to Kevin. The new hotel had been taken down. In the end, they had lost 4 guests, which was sad, but didn't have as many casualties as they had feared.

Guests left and new ones came and slowly life went back to normal. In the first two weeks Kevin had given as much support as he could. Scotty was happy that Kevin had come out of shell and developed into quite the social person. Like Chad he easily made friends. He got along very well with guests. Always interested in hearing stories.

And last week he had suddenly told Scotty that he was thinking about doing 'something with the law' again. Not sure what, but it would come to him. Scotty smiles and turns over to Kevin, putting an arm around him to pull him closer. Kevin doesn't wake up, just snuggles closer in his sleep.

No. Life is good. He's not sure for how long he'll continue to be this happy, but he plans to enjoy it as much as he can. He places a small kiss on Kevin's shoulder. And as he drifts off to sleep he considers that maybe it's about time to think about getting a cat. Or a dog... No, not kids. Not yet anyway.....
