which puts you two up on everyone else, who responded with resounding silence. which is what ALWAYS happens when i post something i think will be wanky.
You know, it might be the cut. I passed it at first, because I thought it was just talking about Pirates 3, which I haven't seen (and have little interest in, I find). I finally clicked on a second pass through my flist, when I read the text a little more carefully.
mmm. i guess i just wanted it to be clear that there were pirates spoilers involved. people are still trying to convince me that pirates is Not That Bad, and even when i was looking for spoilers NO ONE talked about this. which is really disappointing.
(so far as i am concerned? pirates canon ends with the first movie and continues with my happy little world where jack & james & elizabeth are all piratical and seximified together ;) )
ANYWAY. back to the point, which is if two white boys exhibited the behaviors hiro & ando do towards each other? hooo-boy there would be so much fic. i really believe this to be true. and that is terrible.
i actually saw romeo must die & i don't remember where or why, but i went in thinking, i'm not one for cheesy action movies but i'm looking forward to all the interracial pretty. & even with such low expectations, i was disappointed. i was really confused as to why there was zero romantic angle, & the truth is dispiritingly plausible.
but i thought "oh, it's a white male thing, they decided that asian women are sexually available to them & asian men are invisible in their unmasculinity/must be posed as no competition." most straight white women i know find asian men suitable objects of attraction (including, er, as you might have figured out, me). but heroes slash, if it follows the statistics quoted about slash, is mostly by/for straight white women. so i don't even have my earlier excuse, for why the asian heroes are unslashed (i don't watch the show or read the slash).
i think in mass media it -is- a white male thing, especially with the whole exotic asian woman thing. and in fandom, i do not know. a lot of times people say they're afraid of getting things wrong with characters of color, which is totally ridiculous to me because. um. they're women writing men and -that- doesn't freak them out.
i do not know! it is frustrating, though, especially since even i, less-than-straight, find asian men suitable objects of attraction, although perhaps not as obviously as you do ;)
well, yes. and i was poorly worded as well, in that i mostly just meant that as i'm not engaged to a fellow of asian descent, i am slightly less obvious with the general attraction :)
I just saw Pirates 3 tonight (for free, thankfully), and the Village Voice review is not exaggerating. There are a whole slew of racial stereotypes in the movie, but Chow Yun-Fat bears the brunt of them. The Singaporean pirates associated with him are treated pretty fairly (if minimally), but his scenes with Elizabeth are just ludicrous.
And yeah, you're not missing anything at all. There was one action sequence that I found impressive (and another scene that was so bizarre it reminded me of a Samuel Beckett play, which made me laugh out loud to myself), but other than that I was both bored AND confused. Yuck.
1) I am so, so glad I have another reason not to see pirates three.
2) God, why am I not surprised? I'm not even in Heroes fandom and I've seen maybe three minutes of the show, but Hiro/Ando seemed like such a screamingly obvious pairing.
2) THEY ARE. like i've said elsewhere, if i was the ship_manifesto type? i would totally be writing one on them. it would be crazy-easy. but fandom appears to be all about a) petrellicest (which -- the thing is, i totally get 'cest pairings when it's them-alone-against-the-world. but the petrellis do not exist in a vacuum) and b) sylar/mohinder (and there's one CoC, so that's an improvement, but neither of them are remotely appealing characters to me. sylar's all "my mom was meeeen omg" and mohinder is just -dumb-. they're pretty, though, so there you go.)
