Drooling over Satan's own soft drink

You know what's tragic? I gave up the Diet Coke habit years ago now because aspartame gave me incredible migraines if I missed a day of soda drinking. That was freaky and I don't think it's nice to fool with Mother Nature anyway so I just stay the hell away from all artificial sweeteners. I also really hate corn syrupy sweetness so I don't even ( Read more... )

I don't miss the headaches, but damn, I did love that stuff! Plain iced tea just isn't the same.

Exactly! I love iced tea, but nothing is quite like the Diet Coke. There is something evil but delicious in there.

Be strong! You can do it! I used to actually drink Diet Coke at breakfast time. I was a sad, sad junkie. Refreshed though. Very refreshed.

yeah, i usually started with a can of dr. pepper around 9-10 am and had 1 with lunch if i went out to eat, and one more in the afternoon at work. and one at home for dinner.

i am still drinking other sodas to help me wean off, but i'm down to one a day and i feel so much better.

i actually drank diet coke my entire life until i was about 19 or so, and then i made the leap to dr. pepper. the way i found out about santa was i woke up in the middle of the night and wanted diet coke, so i wandered out to the living room, where my parents were wrapping presents. i was only 3! I was too young to be upset at all about santa, just upset when my mom rushed me off to bed and brought me water.

Aspartame is the devil.
It irritates my throat and leaves a vile taste throughout my mouth.
I find it very disheartening how it keeps showing up in more and more products.
Sometimes I see a new beverage and I get excited and buy it without looking at the label only to end up in utter disgust after swallowing my first sip.
I really need to read labels before buying things. I have the same problem with microwavable things. Sometimes I buy something only to find out later that the only heating instructions available are for the microwave and I haven't owned one of those nasty machines in years.
Sigh.
I guess most of the world lovingly embraced chemicals and radiation but I missed the boat.

I hope your green tea gave you the fix that you needed.

I am trying to stop using Splenda everyday in my coffee...but haven't done it yet because I've lost 9 lbs and I am scared the sugar will make it come back! ugh.

I used to drink my coffee light and sweet. Then one day I had no half and half so I had it with just the sugar and I enjoyed it. That got me to thinking about how nice it would be to be able to just drink the coffee as is without having to put anything in it. So I gave up the sugar too and just drank it black. The first few days it seemed a bit on the bitter side but I quickly got used to that. Now I get to taste just the coffee itself without anything tampering with the flavors. Like wine, there are a lot of subtle tastes in a good cup of coffee and as far as I know we've never added milk and sugar to our Merlots and Pinot Grigios, so why our coffees?

I agree. I like milk and sugar, but with good coffee it's not at all necessary.

Don't totally knock the microwaves though. I don't eat a lot of pre-prepared food really, but the microwave makes perfectly steamed broccoli in 5 minutes without taking up a place on my cooktop or needing any supervision while I wrangle the main course.

i admire your resolve - i'm still enslaved to the diet coke goodness. i have cut back to one bottle a day (or 20 ounces in spurts). it's more of a struggle than i'd like to admit!

If it weren't for the blinding headaches I don't know that I would have stopped. It's so weird and astringent tasting, but somehow it remains enshrined in my sensory memories as the best thing ever. What on Earth is in that stuff? Does it alter our brains permanently?

Mmmmmm, Diet Coke. Though I'm not drinking it any more either. I do still have a soft spot for Dr. Pepper - beverage of my youth.

I can't believe that half of my friendslist is sitting around pining for Diet Coke! I'm now beginning to suspect that it contains mind altering drugs.

Dr. Pepper is pretty tasty for soda. I like Pibb even better though. I only ever seem to get any when I visit Georgia so I suspect that it tastes extra good because it's vacation soda.
