Maybe it's because I'm from California, but I really don't know how to eat grits. Do you put anything in it? It's awfully plain and unpleasant by itself. But I'm sure it must be enjoyable because people do order it.

Ahh I see, it is explained right in the article:

"They are often eaten for breakfast with butter or even sugar; sometimes chilled and then fried in slices; and, for more substantial meals, fortified with stronger-tasting foods such as cheese, bacon, shrimp."

Yeah, grits are a bland starch by themselves, kind of like potatoes or pasta. Most people put butter and salt on them at the very least.

I'm not a huge fan of grits. I mean, I'll eat them, but I've got half a box of instant grits that's been in the cupboard for at least a year. Fried grits are really good, but so is pretty much anything if you fry it and add cheese.

Do they even sell grits in California?

They do sell grits, I've seen them on most menus I've looked at, and it's definitely in the supermarket. But it's not a staple that everyone eats every day. We're much more of a toast, eggs, bacon/sausage, or omelettes, scrambles, etc. More people eat oatmeal than grits I think. And cereal.

I've heard of fried grits. If I find them on a menu, I'll order it. And I'll definitely order grits the next time I'm in the south, or in a restaurant that looks like they can prepare grits for me, rather than leaving me to add things to it myself. I'd like to try it.
