I get somewhat annoyed by all the publicity surrounding the guy who self amputated his arm to escape from a trapped boulder. Now he will be making the rounds of all of the talk shows about what a brave courageous lad he was. This is the wrong message. Instead he should have the words "I am stupid" tattooed on his forehead. I beleive the loss of an arm is punishment enough. You are right there is a fine line between stupid and brave.

The publicity stems from the ewwwwww factor, enhanced by his rather grisly story of how he managed to amputate his arm without a knife strong enough to cut through bone. Had he been a just another hiker who got himself killed, injured, or eaten by a bear in the wilderness, the story would generate no interest except on the if-it-bleeds-it-leads local news in his area.
