Well I did something that I almost never do. DNF. That stands for "did not finish" and yes halfway through, I gave up on the book I was reading. No, I won't reveal the title because I've no desire to sabotage sales for this self-published book. Oh dear! The dangers of self-publishing! But I agree with you about Ursula le Guin. My favourite is 'The Left Hand of Darkness' which has some very interesting ideas about gender.

I actually have read "The Left Hand of Darkness" and did like it though I've been told that it pales in comparison the the Earthsea series.

I`ve seen similar awfulness in edited stories. But LeGuin ... Earthsea wasn`t my favorite but she`s so far ahead of the pack it hardly matters.

Lee, you are the first person I've ever heard say anything negative about the Earthsea books. Everyone tells me that it is Le Guin's best work.

Hm. I didn't mean it to be negative, simply that I've read things of hers I enjoyed more. Pure fantasy has to be exceptionally good or I get bored--I don't think there's anyone yet that, for me, matches Tolkien and Pratchett.

Can't argue with you there. Tolkien is the master. I haven't read Pratchett.
