Scareware hijackers

I saw one of these about three weeks ago when I looked up "California rainfall" on google. Right away there were messages about trojan horses and other viruses in my Apple. It was hard to get away from these pop-ups, and finally I just turned off the computer and everything was fine. I notice no unusual workings of my computer since then.

Often when I've used Google there have been one or two useful hits, followed by a page of hits with the same sample text as if quoted from the same source. I wonder if these are the scareware sites--I don't know, I avoided them because of the redundancy.
