Interesting callback to the original prompt... was not expecting from where it started to circle back around there, but really love where you go with this... In a physical and emotional/spiritual sense, I have felt that need described at the opening, myself - and I think we all are feeling that pain of the Earth in the midsection... (well, we are all feeling it, to be sure, though many are denying it...) ...though I do kind of wish for the kind of escape offered by the ending from the deceit and hypocrisy driving everything around us to destruction and ruin. I think this poem is driving me to reflect philosophically on the dire predicament of our world right now - pick any one of them - and, one, that's not super hard to do these days, all things considering, but, two, I imagine that's probably not what you intended here, but I do like that I can create my own journey with the imagery you've provided, and I still feel good about where it has taken me, even if it wasn't where you want me to go. That's a special kind of skill. ;-)
Oooooooh. This resonates with me so! To me it captures some of the feeling of delicious (but still somewhat guilty) privilege of being able to step back, take a deep breath and luxuriate in having the space to examine the bigger picture and one’s place in it. Would that everyone had such luxury.
The opening stanza of this made me feel sick - in a good way, mind you. Living in Florida, the humidity is insane, and the description you gave was just so evocative that I could really feel it. What a great way to put the reader into the right frame of mind for this piece.
As always, your work is a thing of beauty, with just the words themselves begging to be relished, only just barely obscuring real feeling and meaning underneath, like a work of art that gains more depth the more you allow yourself to get lost in it.
