Book browsing, and Kindle lust.

I rarely read a book based solely on reviews, but every now and then a comment in a review intrigues me, and makes me want to read the book.

I was browsing Amazon, hopping from book to book. You know how that is - you follow that "customers who purchased this also purchased this" trail down all sorts of rabbit holes far removed from the book you ( Read more... )

As a cranky late adopter (I prefer to let other consumers work out the kinks for me) I haven't been seduced by the Kindle yet, but I'm sure it's just a matter of time. Ten years ago I didn't think I'd ever want a cellphone, and now I'm an iPhone fiend.

I'm a late adopter as well. I have only now considered trading my old cellphone for one with a full QWERTY keyboard, since the kids and Lou now bombard me with texts, and texting back is a huge pain in the ass on the old style buttons I have.

Oh, it definitely has its drawbacks, and of course will never replace REAL books for me. But I've decided I want one anyway - to fill a particular niche, not be the sum of my reading.

Considering how huge most law texts are, having them in downloadable form would definitely be a plus.
They might consider doing that for many textbooks - lugging them around campus is enough to put one's back out!

I'm keeping my finger away from the 'buy now' button for a while. There's also the Sony Reader to think about. Give it till 2010 and the bugs should be fixed and prices will have fallen as far as they're going to go. Meanwhile I only have to put my hand out to find a new book, and always make sure I have a few with me away from home.

Be strong!

I figure I'll get a Kindle when the price comes down to something much more reasonable, and use it when I travel.

When I pack, I generally get the clothing situation worked out pretty easily. A bunch of black clothes, and pick an accent color.

Choosing the books to take is another story.

1. Find books I:
a)want to read, and
b)am willing to leave somewhere so I:
i)don't have to bring them back, and
ii) have room in my suitcase for books I acquire at my destination.

2. Make sure that I have enough reading material in my carry-on to cover the airport wait, flight, etc., and enough in my suitcase so I don't run out of stuff to read during the trip (even though I know I'll acquire more [see "ii)" above].

3. Weight and space considerations: thin hardbacks or thick paperbacks?

I've been waiting for much the same reasons. But I have a terror of being caught with nothing to read, or even nothing that appeals to me at the moment.
