When I pack, I generally get the clothing situation worked out pretty easily. A bunch of black clothes, and pick an accent color.
Choosing the books to take is another story.
1. Find books I:
a)want to read, and
b)am willing to leave somewhere so I:
i)don't have to bring them back, and
ii) have room in my suitcase for books I acquire at my destination.
2. Make sure that I have enough reading material in my carry-on to cover the airport wait, flight, etc., and enough in my suitcase so I don't run out of stuff to read during the trip (even though I know I'll acquire more [see "ii)" above].
3. Weight and space considerations: thin hardbacks or thick paperbacks?
