So today I saw the movie. I was quite pleased with the movie overall. I read a few reviews/critiques/rants of the movie but kept an open mind. It's been a few years since I sat and the read the novel. ( in case of spoilers )
It made me think Manhattan had some Body Dysmorphic Disorder going on. Crudup has a fine physique, and Dr Manhattan is well-proportioned in the graphic novel, but the movie representation made him look more like a body builder.
I hope to see this movie soon (and can you believe I just recently read the comic? Me, a longtime comic fan who can remember seeing the original issues on the stands). For some reason, even though I read the book recently, I was still shocked by the gay references in the comic. I don't know if that's because such themes are still uncommon in comics today or if I knew I was reading something written when gay references were really taboo. I also think it's dealt with realistically in the comics, how the men need beards and the woman is ostracized. Sad but realistic because that's what happened to movie stars in the '50s.
I didn't buy the graphic novel until sometime after 2000 myself. I think in comics today, it still goes back to some of the titillation factor: characters like Rainmaker from Gen13. It's rarely addressed in a positive manor as characters like Northstar get mutilated and killed. The wedding of Midnighter and Apollo and their adoption of baby Jenny was more for the shock factor than anything.

It wasn't, he's said so in interviews. I personally thought Manhattan was a little too muscle bound.
