We started bee school this past Tuesday and ordered 2 colonies on Wednesday. We have decided to go with Warré hives. We're taking a "natural beekeeping" workshop on Jan 28. We intend to do as little actual Keeping as possible. We just want to provide a good place for them to do their own thing, making sure that they are healthy, have water and ( Read more... )

It takes MANY acres to make lavender honey. Much less to make lavender infused honey. Which could happen :-)

Splendid idea of yours - beekeeping. And I wish I'd known about lavender's anti-deer facility many years ago. Wonder why the 'herb woman' didn't know that.

Nice that you are going to start beekeeping. From what I understand they could be in some sort of decline ~ not real sure about all the statistics, just seems like I read that somewhere. Anyway ~ we need them for proper pollination ~ and honey of course!!!

Lavender ~ hmmm.m.m... I'll have to share that info with my son and his wife as the deer like to 'feast' on their garden each year and it is a real challenge to keep them at bay. Thanks for this info.

Enjoy your new venture with the bees...

The first time beekeepers were aware of Colony Collapse Disorder was 1994, ircc. That was when I decided beekeeping was important, as opposed to just a neat thing to do. But it has taken me a while to get to it. It's been intimidating to get started.

Sounds like bee tending will be lots of fun. Congratulations!

Glad to learn about lavender - what a terrific deer deterrent! I'll spread the word. In no time at all, I predict Durham and Chapel Hill will be emitting aire de lavender!
