Fine lines and gender crimes

It's a good thing we aren't getting actual grades in my tea ceremony class, because I wouldn't be getting a very good one. Today we had class in the tearoom, and I had to be the group leader, because my other classmates ratted me out to the sensei that I hadn't done it yet (thanks, guys). That meant I had to be the first to do everything during ( Read more... )

I totally know what you mean about being wary of spending your life in Japan because of their gender expectations. I always felt weird hearing about something like 99% of women quitting their careers immediately after getting married, as Japanese women are encouraged to do.

Also I always felt like people thought I was a moron because I was a foreigner, even if I was speaking perfect Japanese and following all the customs. That I could not live with. But that doesn't really apply to this entry at all.

I agree. Some of the time I AM a moron, so if I think I'm one, that's sort of okay with me. But other times, I'm TOTALLY DOING STUFF RIGHT, and they still think I can't do anything just because I'm foreign. I couldn't deal with that long-term, either. It drives me nuts.

There was a time when we could've laughed about a teacher yelling at you to be more ladylike, but in context it must just be very frustrating.

Oh, I don't want to say there's nothing funny about it at all, and if you were here (I wish you were!), it'd probably be hilarious. By myself, though, it gets pretty old.

In the book I'm reading for German, the detective mistakes an old woman for a man, and she's all, "oh, don't be embarassed, it happens all the time. I'm used to it." And it was funny, but then you find out he mistook her because she's bald from Holocaust experiments.

You did not tell me; that sounds really interesting! I've never heard of that director (there's a whole lot of Japan-stuff that I don't know, despite living here). I took such an awful film class last year that I can never take a film class again as long as I live, but I hope yours continues to be good.

I miss you too!
