Practical question for yogis. I suspect I know the answer, but verification would be appreciated.

In the instance of a person having a long torso and short arms, should the person still try to put their hands flat to the floor when seated. I've tried to do this, taking special care to drop my shoulders and so on, but I always feel hunched over. When ( Read more... )

not every pose is intended for every body type and many work best when modified to suit your body. I suspect it would be best to do the pose in the way that gives you the best stretch; but it would really be best to do the pose in front of a yoga teacher who can provide the right correction / modification. It is amazing since sometimes I think I totally understand a pose and a slight correction changes what it is working dramatically.

Thanks! I should probably bite the bullet and take a class at this point. All the yoga I've been doing has been through video or pictures, even though I know a real person would be of more help, especially when it comes to poses or movements just not working for my body. I guess I'm not keen on feeling on-display.

Short-term solution, I think I'm going to buy some blocks to deal with the odd disparity between my arms and torso.

Yoga, woo! Five Below on route 1 in Saugus sells yoga blocks for five bucks each. That's where I bought mine.

I know it'd be a haul for you, but my gym (www.pumpsfit.com) has a great yoga class on Thursday nights. My teacher is awesome. She's a real hippy-dippy sort of yogi who makes us chant "Om" at the end of class and everything, but I think that's part of the fun. She (and the other people who go to this gym) are really supportive and friendly and there are people of all types and abilities in the class. And they shut off the lights.

Anyway, the gym membership is only, like, $30-35 which works out to be a really good deal for yoga classes (which are normally something like $15-20 a pop) plus you get the rest of the gym and its classes to go with. The place has super easy access right off of 128. Just a suggestion.

Ooh, I wonder if the Five Below in the Liberty Tree Mall has them too... I will have to investigate. $5 each is excellent, especially when all the browsing I've done online suggests everyone else wants at least $10 for just one.

I was thinking about registering for a staff/faculty class at BU FitRec, but it would be nice to already know somebody...
