mission ambivalent
Well, this is interesting. I'm writing this entry from my rather old HP Mini netbook. I overwrote the old OS (Windows XP) and installed a Linux distro. I had to hunt down a thumb drive, and then I needed to keep referring back to references on my AirBook out of fear that I'd ruin things beyond repair, but I think I've succeeded. Office phone's still down.
Bit the bullet and registered for the C5K Freedom Run in June and the Malden Road Race in July. I'll probably be kicking myself over the Malden race when the time comes, as it's bound to be hotter than blazes, but it seemed like a good idea yesterday evening. Our office phone system has been crashing and reloading since I arrived this morning. Heard David cursing earlier. Just guessing that was his not-so-private reaction to the situation.

the past harmonizes
Stephen King makes much of 'harmonizing' in 11.22.63. Seeing echoes of a theme or person in different times and places. I get that all the time in reading.
For example, I wouldn't expect to read about pig-sticking more than once in a very great while, but it's shown up twice so far this year.

Midway through The Goshawk. I can appreciate (relate to?) T.H. White's monomania--not with falconry specifically, but generally the triumphs and setbacks and hopes and disappointments of immersion in anything.

no one has to get nailed to anything
Began The Goshawk last night after finishing The Candle in the Wind.
As predicted, Candle's ending was kind of a downer--but also philosophical, with Arthur considering the cause of war and how it may be prevented. He seems to come to a conclusion, and then he dies. Reminded me of the girl at the beginning of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy:

My experience with Arthurian legend is pretty incomplete, or this is the conclusion that I've come to as I begin the fourth volume of The Once and Future King.
My Chaucer professor referred frequently to Le Morte d'Arthur (Malory), and T. H. White frequently references the work to say that more complete accounts of what I'm reading are available ( Read more... ) -
enough excitement for now
Yesterday was mostly uneventful for me. BU came to their senses at 6pm on Sunday evening and canceled Monday classes and work for all non-essential staff. Smart move, considering that the MBTA and commuter rail shut down after 2pm.
