FemShep + Saren or Garrus, pet AU

sort of inspired by the slavery prompt on the last meme, but since I'm running in a different direction (and different pairing?) thought I should post here rather than risk derailing that one.
AU premise: turians are considered like animals rather than sapient beings and commonly kept as pets by other species. There are some free turians, but they're considered "feral" and pests at best. At worst, they're considered dangerous and are eliminated.
Somehow, Shepard finds herself responsible for rehabilitating a captured feral turian. She gets a lot more than she bargained for. In the end, either she finds her eyes opened to the plight of the turians, who are sapient beings after all, or the turian winds up well-trained and loyally Stockholm'd.
I'm not picky on whether it ends up as a pairing or not... and while I am partial to Saren or Garrus, I'm open to the idea of it being another turian as well.

Greedy passerby!Anon kinda wants to see this with some cameos from other, minor turians... like, maybe she's talking to another turian trainer for advice, and that guy has some old, worn out, broken-spirited turians like Lilihierax and Kuril. I don't know why I want this, but I guess seeing some tired, sad old turians could help steer Shepard away from over-correcting her her high-spirited feral? (shrug)

“Aw, come on, buddy, you’re friendly, aren’t you?” The turian kept his ice blue eyes on her, watching for any sign that she would start yelling, probably. He looked like he’d been abused

“What do you mean, you’re full?” Tali demanded. Shepard could barely hear her, but the way she was waving her arms around at the clerk who manned the shelter’s front desk was clear enough. Shep had hung back with the turian, since he seemed scared to go in. She ran a hand along his shoulder as he trembled.
“It’s okay, big guy. Shhh, it’s okay.”
Tali stormed out a moment later. Shep could tell she was glaring even through the mask. “They’re full,” Tali said.
Shepard waited. She knew she didn’t need her friend’s permission to keep an animal. They didn’t even live together, not since Tali had married that Kal’Reegar guy. But still, Shep waited.
“If you’re keeping it, you need to buy food for it, at least,” Tali said.
“Do you hear that, big guy? You’re coming home with me, yes, you are, yes, you are!”
“Do you have to do that voice every time you talk to it?” Tali punched a few numbers into her omni-tool. “Kal, hi. Look, I might be a little late. No, it’s just -- I know, but
