Later, Shepard will swear that she jinxed herself. She wakes up from what's got to be a killer migraine, only to be assaulted by the med-bay's too-bright lights. Mordin swims into her vision, and she wonders why he's not Dr. Chakwas

After a meeting with her XO, and a stop by Kelly, Shepard heads up to her loft at the end of the first shift. Her migraine had ebbed, but it's still insistent. Plus she feels sweaty and sticky, and just wants a cold shower. Usually she'd stop by everyone's station towards the end of the shift and catch up with them, but she's just not feeling too hot today, or rather, she feels too damned hot. When she finally gets herself under the cold spray of her private shower, she sighs in bliss. She moves to grab the shampoo bottle, and somehow manages to cut her palm on the corner of the shelf. She looks dumbly at the thick red blood dripping down her hand and arm. That's never happened before, she thinks. I have a freaking skin weave. Did it disappear? She shakes her head and moves her hand under the spray to wash it off. She watches curiously as the clotting wound gradually, and quickly, turns a darkish purple-blue, like a bruise, and all around the small cut. She decides to forgo washing her hair for the moment, in favor of putting a dab of

She wakes up with a gasp, and there's hands on her shoulders. When the fog lifts from her eyes she sees Chakwas, Mordin, and Miranda all standing over her. She eases back into the bed at Chakwas' silent urging, and notices she's back in the med-bay from just having been free of it for a few hours

Chakwas nods and places a careful hand on Shepard's arm, “We think the same thing will happen all over.” Shepard doesn't want to picture it, but she does. The image of her skin falling off, blue and bloody, stays with her as the doctor continues. “We're not sure how long this will take. For the duration of the change, you'll be quarantined to med-bay

She wakes up in the middle of the night screaming in a mixture of fear and intense pain. Worse than the thresher acid that had burned her skin so many years ago. Her other hand, her right hand, is bleeding blue blood. It's happening. She's actually turning into a turian. Her soft, papery human skin is falling off in clumps of bloody blue gore. The exposed tissues of her fingers start to fuse together as the bones shift and crack with sickening, painful little pops. She watches in horror as her five-fingered human hand becomes a three-fingered turian appendage in mere moments right before her eyes. The other hand must already be turian beneath the cast, she thinks vaguely right before her forearm snaps with enough force and pain as it lengthens and shifts to cause her to double over and wail“Oh God, oh God, oh God,” she repeats over and over again as her muscles spasm and shift along her changing bones and growing plate. Her pain threshold is way over what the painkillers in her veins covers. She cries out again as her pointer and

When she next wakes she feels cottony, wool stuffed in her ears, and a watery film over her eyes as she tries to get her senses to focus and clarity to return to her. It's an effort, but at least she doesn't feel pain anymore. She finds both Mordin and Chakwas standing over her when she finally focuses.
“Doctors,” she pauses after she says her greeting. Her voice is... different. It reverberates. There's an undertone, and so she repeats her greeting to hear it again, “Doctors.” She blinks. She sounds like a turian, “What the fuck?”
“Shepard.” Mordin greets in turn, ignoring her last question. She notes that he's practically bouncing, and a frown pulls at her face... as does something else. She moves that foreign set of muscles again. It feels funny - a pulling sensation at the sides of her face near her jaw. She moves those muscles more violently, and something clacks against her cheeks.
“I have mandibles,” she says with shock and can feel her eyes widen. She quickly struggles into an upright sitting position, and looks down at

When she wakes feeling exhausted despite her sleep, heavy, and, well, odd in general. She turns her head to find Garrus sitting in a chair beside her in a military-straight posture.
“They thought it would be best if you woke up to a friendly face that wasn't, err, Mordin.” He stammers after a moment of silence between the two. “Kelly wanted to come, but, well, she's Kelly. Didn't think you wanted a psych-eval right now.”
She sighs, and the dual-tones of it rattles her some. She sits in an upright position, her thicker and longer three-fingers of her hands stretching and feeling strange. “Thanks,” she mutters and her mandibles snap to her face in a turian version of a grimace. Her voice still sounds off to her. “This is so... weird, right

Garrus is roused out of his thoughts after he hands Shepard the mirror and hears her gasp in shock. Her fingers trace around the lower edge of the plates bordering the dark brown skin around one of her eyes. “My eyes - they're not green anymore.” Instead of the pale green of her once human eyes, her turian version is more of a turquoise color. She's not sure what to think of that particular change - or all the others. She smooths the pads of her fingers over the mahogany-colored plates of her face, and ghosts them over her short mandibles. She doesn't recognize herself, and for some reason that's all the more horrible. “I don't know what to think,” she says honestly after a long moment of self-examination. She can hardly believe what has happened. She almost wants to cry again. “This is so weird,” she repeats one of her earlier statements. Something occurs to her though, “What do you think?” she asks Garrus as she sets aside the mirror, “Do I look... normal? For a turian, I mean.” She wouldn't know what to do if she looks like some

She's very thankful that Tali's here, and even more thankful that Tali's letting her squeeze her tight in a smothering hug. Shepard needs the physical contact. Something to ground her. The last few hours since she's awoken to find herself plated and spiky have been surreal.
“You make a very lovely turian, Shepard,” Tali says as she's careful not to press too hard into the spots of Shepard's body that could puncture her suit.
“It's not so bad,” she hears Garrus say from the other side of the couch in her loft. They had moved to her room after Tali had joined them in the med-bay, and Shepard had found her feet again. She's taller than she once was, and her legs feel stiff and don't bend like she's used to. “That Prothean device could've turned you into a krogan.”
Tali giggles, “Or a hanar. Keelah! Could you imagine? You a hanar?” She giggles again, and Shepard supposes they're right. At least she can still hold a gun.
“Fine. I'm glad I'm not a hanar,” she sighs exasperatedly and finally loosens her hold on her quarian friend. She

She's still fumbling with the turian utensil when Garrus' fingers envelop hers and adjust her grip on the metal object. “Try it now,” he says as he almost hesitates before withdrawing his hand. She swears he's fidgeting when she finally scoops a bite of the blue-grey... turian Shepard's pie.
“Oh my God,” Shepard whispers after she swallows. “It tastes just like chocolate covered bacon.” She takes another bite, “Yep. Chocolate covered bacon. Weird. She finishes quickly and pats her stomach in satisfaction, or where she assumes her stomach is, when she's full of the odd concoction - and Garrus visibly startles in his seat beside her. “What?” she asks with a confused tilt of her head, “You seem a little jumpy there, Garrus

Shepard wakes up early in the night-cycle with a sharp breath and her heart hammering away in her chest. Her normal nightmares now have the added element of her skin and hair falling off, and the phantom pains of her metamorphosis into her new turian body. She looks down at her arms and hands - she's still a turian. She gently rubs her left palm, the spot where she first bled blue and a miserable trill bubbles out from her throat. She wishes this never happened, that she was still human and she never touched that Prothean tech.
“Commander,” EDI breaks through her thoughts. “Your vocalization patterns indicate significant levels of distress. Should I contact Dr. Chakwas?”
“No, EDI.” She shakes her head to clear it, and rubs a hand along the pointed spines of her fringe; they're barely as long as the length of her skull, “I'm fine... Thanks,” she adds as an afterthought. She sighs and clamors out of her new harder and dipped turian-made bed Miranda had bought for her. I'm not getting any more sleep after that.Several hours later,
