I was just reading that the death toll from the tsunami has reached 71,000. On last night's national news I saw that the U.S. government has pledged to give $35 million in relief aid. I suppose that probably sounds like a lot of money to a lot of people, and I suppose if you're down and out, living hand-to-mouth, it is a lot of money. However for ( Read more... )

It's definitely one of the most tragic things I've ever seen. They said that over a third of the victims are children. Makes ya wanna cry, know what I mean?

It's really horrible... And the number could double due to disease and contamination.

Now the number is 76K. When I posted this morning (early this afternoon, as I was waiting for something to complete my post), it had been at 55K.

35 million is chump change, Sir. Especially when more is being spent for Bush's second coronation - er, inaugural.

I hope your holidays are going well, and thank you for the list.

Hi sweetie. Nice to hear from you and thanks, my holidays went rather nicely.

Yeah, you were right the first time, it is a coronation. You'd think with all the bullshit going on around the world they'd try to tone things down a little bit. Oh well, it just goes to show where his priorities are... the same place his head's at.

Natural disasters always shake me.

There was an earthquake in Mexico City a few years back that National Geographic covered. One amazing picture they took was of a young girl, perhaps 12 years old, minutes before she died. She was waste high in water, her eyes bloodshot. Apparently she was standing on the shoulders of her dead father. Pretty gruesome. But gives you a serious awareness of how fragile our lives really are.

You're right Damana, frail indeed. They scare me as well, especially when they are of epic proportions like this one was.
