Chapter 5:

When Masaki announced that he had something to declare, Sho, Satoshi and Jun knew better than to turn up. However, the unsuspecting Kazunari, who only lived in the Ninomiya mansion for less than a week, decided that Masaki had something important to say to them and agreed to go for the ‘meeting’. Not wanting anything bad to happen to the young master of the Ninomiya family, the other three tagged along.

“I’m glad you guys decided to show up!” cheered Masaki as the four entered his room.

“‘Decided to show up’?” repeated Kazunari hesitantly. Poking Satoshi, who was the closest, he asked, “is there something I should know,”

“Usually, when Masaki says he want to hold a meeting, I can’t turn out good,” explained Satoshi, backing away from the tallest male.

“Satoshi! That’s mean,” pouted Masaki, “this time, my plan is super cool!”

“Just get on with it,” scowled Jun.

Ignoring the fuming man, Masaki proceeded with his plan, “This year, I plan to celebrate my birthday at the Ski resort in Sapporo! We can celebrate Christmas there too! I already got permission from Lord Ninomiya,”

The room fell into silence as the gears in four heads started churning. Masaki’s plan seemed harmless enough.

“Please!” begged the honey-haired man, giving Kazunari the best puppy-dog look he could muster. If Kazunari agreed to go, the rest would surely have to go as well.

“Okay,” said Kazunari at last. How bad could it be? It was just skiing, something which he hadn’t tried before. Even though Kazunari wasn’t someone who liked sports in particular, he had been dying to get out of the mansion for more than a day.

Masaki let out a cry of joy while punching his fist into the air, purposely ignoring the groans coming from the other three.

So that was how all five of them found themselves standing at the top of a snowy hill, dressed in skiing outfits and in their ski equipment.

“Race you guys down!” cried Masaki as he pushed off with his poles. His maniac laughter was carried away by the wind as he sped down the hill and disappeared from sight within seconds. Jun rolled his eyes at Masaki’s hyper-ness and followed after him, but at a slower, but still quite fast, speed.

That leaves Kazunari, Sho and Satoshi at the top of the hill.

“After you,” said the two eldest, looking at Kazunari.

Kazunari played with his fingers, refusing to look at neither Sho nor Satoshi, “actually, I can’t ski,”

“Oh,” they said at the same time.

“Just follow what I do,” instructed Satoshi, gliding forward slightly so that he was in front of Kazunari.

“And I’ll be behind you,” added Sho, not wanting to let Satoshi have Kazunari all to himself.

On the count of three, Satoshi skied off, slowly so that Kazunari could get a hang of it. Following in Satoshi’s tracks, Kazunari turned his legs in an attempt to keep to the zigzag lines that Satoshi was making. Everything was fine at first, and Kazunari was starting to get the hang of skiing, until they came to a steep part of the slope. Unfortunately, it was nearly impossible for them to spot the sudden change in gradient to all the whiteness around them, at then was when…

“AHHHH!” yelped Kazunari as he started picking up speed. Losing control of everything, Kazunari sped down the slope screaming for help. Satoshi and Sho zoomed down after him, but their delayed reaction allowed Kazunari to be so far in front of them that it was impossible for the two to catch up without killing themselves.

To say that Kazunari was terrified would be an understatement. He was on the verge of losing it. That was his first time skiing, and Kazunari had no idea how to turn or stop. All he could do was scream at the top of his lungs as the trees beside him blurred to form one huge patch of green. Kazunari tried to fall down so that he could at least reduce his speed, but at the rate he was going, falling down would only cause him to break his neck.

Seconds later, the end of the slope became larger and larger. He could see two figures, which he assumed were Masaki and Jun, standing by the ski lifts. Masaki seemed to be yelling for Kazunari to go faster, while Jun stood there staring at him.

It didn’t take long for Kazunari to come up to where the two were. Masaki finally realized something was wrong and screamed at him to stop. Yes, Kazunari was loved to stop, but no matter how much he prayed or tried, he was still travelling at the speed of light.

Bracing himself for the impact, Kazunari shut his eyes tightly. Suddenly, he heard a ‘holy shit’ before ramming into something. The next thing he knew, there was a loud sound of sloshing snow followed by a loud ‘oof’.

Slowly opening his eyes, Kazunari hoped that he didn’t injure himself too badly. Thankfully, when he moved around, nothing seemed to be broken and the only thing hurting was his chest which hit something soft.

Kazunari knew that snow was soft, but what he was lying on wasn’t that soft to be snow. So glancing down, he had the shock of his life.

“Jun!” cried the shorter male, frantically trying to push himself off the person he had crashed into. But with their limbs tangled up so badly they looked like Siamese twins joined all over the place, all Kazunari did was press himself harder against Jun.

“Ow,” whined Jun, entangling his arms and legs from Kazunari’s. The two laid on the snow, trying to recover from the shock. For Jun, it wasn’t his first time crashing into someone when skiing, and managed to overcome the shock. The moment he saw Kazunari lying there, face ghostly white, he did not know what he was thinking when he got up and carried him, bridal style, into the resort.

“Are you alright?” he asked worriedly, placing Kazunari onto a nearby bench before kneeling down and checking for any broken bones.

“Jun, I’m fine,” answered the trembling man. Jun looked up. When he caught Kazunari’s eye, his body seemed to have heated up on his own. Under the layers of jackets, Jun felt as if his body was on fire. Tearing his eyes away, Jun pulled his hands which were around Nino’s leg, away.

Giving him a fake pout, Jun whined, “that’s too bad, I was hoping that you broke a bone or two,”

With that said, Jun walked off with his hands in his pockets. Kazunari didn’t have time to think about Jun’s odd behaviour, for Sho burst in, calling his name.

“Kazunari, all you okay?” he asked, voice full of concern, “I’m so sorry for making you ski down that slope even when you told us you couldn’t ski, I’m really, really sorry!”

“Sho,” he began, placing both hands on the taller male’s shoulders, “It’s not your fault, I don’t blame you or anything,”

Sho sighed in relief as he helped Kazunari stand up. Just then, Satoshi and Masaki came flying in asking if Kazunari was alright while apologizing for bringing him skiing.

Kazunari smiled and told them that everything was fine. In fact, he thanked them. Thanked them for leading him one step closer to find out why Jun was so mean towards him.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Masaki’s birthday party started off with the birthday boy pouncing on Kazunari the moment he entered the ballroom.

“Yay! Kazu is here!” he cried happily, engulfing the smaller male in a big hug.

“Masaki!” pouted Masaki’s prey as he struggled to get free from the predator.

“Everyone’s here!” exclaimed the birthday boy, “time to get the party started!”

Masaki’s definition of ‘getting the party started’ was getting everyone to drink until they could not even comprehend what they were saying. But too bad for the birthday boy as only he himself found that plan rather amusing and went ahead with it, while the other four stood there staring at him.

When the clock struck ten, Masaki had drunk several bottles of alcohol that if weren’t for Sho helping him stand, he would have collapsed onto the floor.

“This is so fun!” cried Masaki, his speech slurring so bad it was nearly impossible to figure out what he said.

“That’s enough alcohol for you,” chided Sho, snatching the bottle away from Masaki.

The drunken man pouted, “Sho-chan, you’re no fun! I *hiccup* wish Toma were here *hiccup* , he would drink with me!!”

The atmosphere in the air seemed to have tensed as the look of horror registered on Sho’s and Satoshi’s faces. All Kazunari needed to do was look at Jun’s face to know why. Dark storm clouds seemed to have gathered above Jun’s head as his eyes turned blood red. Jun was beyond pissed, he was incensed. Fortunately, Kazunari didn’t have to see Jun rip anyone to pieces in rage, for Satoshi grabbed him by the hand and ran out of the ballroom.

The two dashed down the corridor for all they were worth, only stopping when they were in the safety of their room.

Exhausted, Satoshi slumped against the closed door and slid down, “that stupid Masaki,” groaned Satoshi, burying his head in his hands.

“Satoshi…” began Kazunari, extremely confused, “What’s going on? Who’s Toma?”

Satoshi glanced up at Kazunari. He thoroughly scanned the latter as if pondering if he should answer his question or not. In the end, Satoshi sighed, got up and pulled Kazunari over to the beds.

“Toma was Jun’s ex,” he started, “they met in high school and were madly in love with each other. At least Jun was. Long story short, Toma only agreed to go out with Jun because his parents forced him to be close to Jun in order to gain benefits from the Ninomiya cooperation. When Jun found out, he was so mad that he went crazy, so it’s best that Toma not be mentioned…I hope Sho managed to save Masaki from being killed by Jun,”

Kazunari sat on his bed, absorbing the facts. He now knows a bit about Jun’s past, but that still didn’t help he solve the mystery behind why Jun hated him so much when he didn’t even do anything to the other.

“I have another question,” said Kazunari after a while.

Satoshi looked at him as if to say he didn’t mind answering his query.

“Why are we sharing a room?” he asked shyly, “it’s not that I mind or anything, it’s just, Masaki reserved the whole hotel, so…”

Satoshi let out a laugh, “Well, about that…Lord Ninomiya wanted to make sure you were safe and insisted on sending guards with us, but Masaki thought that they would prevent us from having fun, so he compromised with Lord Ninomiya - one of us would have to be with you 24/7. It’s late, we better get some sleep,”

Kazunari watched as Satoshi switched off the lights and slip under the blankets of his bed, so he followed suit. As he laid in bed, Kazunari tried to process the facts - Jun hated him, Jun had mails about jobs, transportation and housing when he lived a bliss life in the mansion, Jun had an ex who was with him because of his connection with his grandfather. Nothing made sense to him. He could infer from the mails that Jun wanted to leave the mansion, but that was only a guess.

With his mind filled with Jun, Kazunari could not sleep and ended up tossing and turning in bed for god knows how long.

“Can’t sleep?” asked a sleepy voice, shocking Kazunari.

He turned over so that he was facing Satoshi, “yeah,”

He thought that was the end of it, but when he saw a silhouette throwing his blankets off, climbing out of bed, lifting his blankets and slipping into bed with him, he nearly died from shock.

“Satoshi…?” asked Kazunari, his voice quivering like crazy.

“Sssh,” hushed Satoshi, sliding a hand under Kazunari’s waist while snaking the other around his shoulder to his head. Pulling Kazunari’s head so that it was right next to his, Satoshi whispered, “is this better?”

Kazunari badly wanted to scream “OF COURSE NOT!!” but his heart pounded so furiously that he couldn’t get his voice to work. Listening to Satoshi breathing in and out, Kazunari seemed to have relaxed a little and coupled with Satoshi’s scent, Kazunari found himself drifting off into a deep slumber.
