Went out to the cinema last night. My oldest schoolfriend lives in Durham and we've been rekindling our friendship (which hasn't ever really gone away completely, after three and a half decades that would be difficult to kill!) - last night we went to see X Men: First Class, while her husband stayed in with their three young daughters. It was great ( Read more... )

I'm glad the cake worked out. I've only made it once myself so I was hoping it would be OK. Did it rise OK? I just found out that my customary 1 tsp of baking powder per cup of plain flour as a substitute for self-raising has been wrong all those years; it should be more like 3. which seems rather a lot.

I have the BEST chocolate cake recipe if you're interested: it's always rich and moist and delicious--and so easy to make. Easier than the ricotta cake actually as there's no beating or separated eggs. (But I do adore lemony things.)

I went with SR flour plus 2 tsp baking powder, plus I sifted it together, as you said you'd had problems with it sinking. And I baked it for about 45 minutes in the end.

Post the chocolate cake recipe!

How did that turn out? I don't do enough cake baking to keep two kinds of flour but I'll add more BP next time I try. It was delicious anyway.

I'll make a new post for the chocolate cake recipe. :-)

Turned out fine. It's very moist, but light - I think it could do with slightly more BP even, as it was slightly too soggy in the bottom.

Can't wait for the choccy cake recipe.

I'm glad that you were able to get out - time out sounds good for both of you, as well as it being a chance to see each other. Did you enjoy the film?

Yay win! I often look at such surveys and assume that I would never, ever win - and so don't even fill them in. I'm glad that you did.

I hope your hayfever eases soon!

I really enjoyed the film, except that I don't buy James McAvoy as a young Patrick Stewart!

Very excited about the big Amazon purchase. I nearly bought Doctor Who DVDs (the Martha series) but then decided to go with all books.

I think it's a cold rather than hayfever :(
