I'm not sure I want slippers at all. I want to be insulated from the floor, to move my toes, and ideally be able to use most of my foot muscles and not end up with sweaty feet. My feet don't sweat much in the china flats; they sweat more than I like in my Merrell clogs. Socks are not enough, at least in the kitchen.

We can compare feet when you're over here, if you like. And my solution might well be to actually give Zappos a try if they have veg-friendly birks. My late, lamented Birkenstocks got me through a lot. :-)

I was going to suggest Birks (and yes, there are synthetic material ones). I wear mine around the house, and add socks of varying weights if I'm cold.
