nebulizer treatments suspended
Pep's bloodwork yesterday looked pretty good, and his breath sounds are not getting worse or better, so his vet says we can stop the antifungal nebulizer treatments and see what happens. We have concerns that he's not putting on weight despite eating and drinking, and at least some of his pee is orange. Now he is off all meds except his daily ( Read more... ) -
Grunty McGrunty pants
Pep has been fighting respiratory ick of one kind or another for quite a while now. He's had three kinds of antibiotics and his lungs sound okay, but he clearly has something going on in his nose. simplifying the med parade
Teddy got seriously constipated, and the antibiotic course most recently prescribed was done, so their vet authorized us to stop all antibiotics and just continue with metacam once daily for each of them. We're still hand-supplementing their feed and trying to make sure Teddy stays hydrated. Still, easier than that PLUS two antibiotics each. -
Anniversary of cavy insanity
Two years ago today, chiefoperator and I hit what is possibly the height of the piggy insanity here when we brought home Brian and Stewie, Teddy and Pep. We knew the job was dangerous when we took it. The first two were old and Pep had a visible neurological condition. In which Teddy joins the medication parade
Pep is better than he has been, though he still has odd breath sounds in the morning and sometimes when he is plotting world domination. We didn't know whether his vet wanted him to continue antibiotics, so he got a recheck visit yesterday. Yes, he should continue to be sure whatever it is goes away and stays away.

Pep passed his re-check
I was concerned Pep's vet would want to do another molar trim soon so I was nervous before his appointment. (Most vets put piggies under to do dental work and Pep was not fast to recover last time.) The verdict is that the molars are still a touch long but better than they were at his last visit, so he is doing alright at wearing them down himself ( Read more... ) -
Pep rebounded
Piggies who won't eat die, and relatively quickly. Their guts need to move, so his anorexia last Sunday looked very bad. His vet looked him over, rubbed his jaws, fed him goo (which the little weasel took without fighting), and said his molars are looking a little long, so we should think strongly about scheduling an appointment for a trim. baking experiments
I started watching the latest season of The Great British Baking Show a couple of weeks ago. A Zingy Citrus Madeira cake appeared in my kitchen just before Great Northeastern War, in time to leave some for chiefoperator and take the rest to my hosts at Lochleven. BCT hike: Map 7, almost all of Section E
I'm hiking in Wayland now. After a quick turn through a former Nike missile site and a bit of local road walking, I spent most of today's hike in Trout Brook conservation area. The part nearest the Water Dept. is dampish and the trail isn't too wide. The boardwalks are fine, and lots of dragonflies today. After that, the trail rises to ridges with ( Read more... ) -
I camped at the Cape Cod canal
I enjoyed Scusset Beach's tent area more than I thought I would. The RVs have spots out in the open, but somebody thought it would be a good idea to nestle five tent sites into the tree line, so I had a spot just off the road to park the car, then separate areas for tent, cook fire, and picnic table.
