In retrospect, it was just a steam pipe explosion. Unfortunately, we do not live in retrospect. Had I been living in retrospect, I would have been one calm and collected bitch. Yes, it was really quite scary. Policemen screaming at us - run, run! Peope screaming all round - a skyscraper has fallen! Not knowing whether another one is about to collapse right on top of you as you are walking. And totally surreal - once I walked away for about 4 blocks to Times Square - noone seemed to even pay attention. Yes, it was on the news, but aside from tourists (who were very excited), people just kept walking.
