If you want some asskicking, definitely talk to a trainer. Most of my exercise routine revolves around 1. weight lifting for warmup and 2. ass kicking on the elliptical trainer for upwards of 30 minutes. I usually only spend 45 minutes in the gym. It's honestly only doing good things for my self-esteem, I haven't seen much in the way of a marked improvement in my physique. Though, I'm told that I'm stronger, overall from having worked out routinely for a month. -shrug- I'm a self-teachy kind of person and am more likely to work out using methods and routines from a magazine or combining things I know from other areas I've used.
