How's the view from Vista

So FL I have an actually serious question. Is Vista really that bad? I have yet to actually use it but I have yet to hear anything good, and if I purchase a new computer I have to buy it. I don't have a choice. It sucks. I don't want it, but I really don't have a choice, unless I get a Mac and throw XP on there. Sadness. Need some advice.

You totally have a choice, just get a Vista PC and let me hook you up with XP Pro from work. Format the damn thing and install a fresh, untainted copy of XP. Vista apps and kernel stuff is as yet not really supported by most applications and it's a HUGE memory hog. Until there's a common install base of 4-6gb+ of RAM and 3.0ghz dual-core processors or most quad-cores, Vista is going to be slow even with all apps pared down. Don't use it. There are a bunch of good Macs out there if you wanna play with Boot Camp, but Dell laptops are really still the value to beat. Most can come with XP if you go on the business site.

It really depends on what you want to do with it. Since 75% of software that isn't made by Microsoft isn't Vista compatible, you end up coming out ahead if you stick with XP.

Vista's quirks outweigh its benefits. If you trust that the software you use daily works on Vista, then go for it, I say.

I'm pretty damn sure that the day to day stuff doesn't work at all on vista.

i concur with the above statements. vista isn't bad but not everything has caught up to it software-wise. we're still having problems getting all of our admin tools to work under it so a coworker and i have only just played with it in a testing capacity.

the other thing with the mac crossover is that you'd have to be careful with that. a buddy of mine has a mac and gave it a try with putting windows on it but had some really strange graphics issues in XP and inquiring at a mac store gave him a "well, if it works fine under OS X there's not much we can do because we don't support windows" or some crap like that.
