From this article:

"The United States of America is an extraordinary country. It is a country that has overcome many, many, now years, decades, actually a couple of centuries of trying to make good on its principles," said Rice, the first black secretary of state in history, serving in a Republican administration.

remove a comma and it might be? I honestly don't know secretaries of state further back than I've been alive.

Then again, the woman who said the civil rights movement and feminism had nothing to do with the position she was able to obtain might not be an authoritative source to start with.

Short attention span news reporting. Perhaps they'll forget about Rice in two years as well.
