I don't know who else reads the Daily Prophet, and I often forget myself unless I have tea with Dad and he gives me his copy to take back to the Hufflepuff dormitory because it's good to keep up with these sorts of things, but did anyone else read that article about the conference in Berlin? I admit that I don't know a lot about politics, but would ( Read more... )

I know what it's like, young Longbottom. It's awful. You don't want to experience it.

What would you have had to be Obliviated for? You're not a Muggle.

Isn't the point of Obliviation that we don't remember anything? So how would you know if you had or hadn't?

How would we know if there is going to be a new Head in Muggle Relations?

Oh, I don't know -- I was thinking maybe someone had talked to someone who knew because maybe that someone they knew also worked in Muggle Relations and had heard something, maybe. I'd ask Mum to ask Uncle Justin but I think he must have gone fishing with Uncle Ernie again because they're he hasn't written back yet, although I guess it was only yesterday so maybe that's why too.

Muggles can be disturbing. I think there's a lot of work that needs to be done before we can ever consider doing away with the Statute of Secrecy. Father says-

Well, if my memory had been modified, I wouldn't know about it, so I doubt it would cause much trauma either way.

Great -- a Slytherin and a Malfoy. Like what sort of work?

And how would you know that?

I wouldn't know what goes on behind the scenes in the Ministry, but there would have to be a lot of groundwork laid so that the two sides don't misunderstand each other.

You wouldn't. That was my whole point.

I agree with that. There's a lot of hate and prejudice on both sides of the fence; a lot of wizards are bigoted towards muggles, and it's not like muggles have a clean slate either. But I suppose, too, that those sorts of things aren't going to go away any time soon, so as long as the transition is done very slowly and smoothly it... could work.

I don't have any contacts in the Ministry so I'd be the last to know about that sort of thing, I'm afraid.

Not as if I was particularly helpful. Anyway, how are things back home?

I think that Muggles will hate us if they find out. They'll be jealous that we can do magic.

Well, I'm sort of jealous that Muggles have some good sweets, but I don't hate them?

You can still get those sweets. Muggles will have magic dangled in front of their faces but no matter what, they can't do it.
