Done, read, finished. Quite a tour de force, 500+ pages of Potter without Hogwarts classes or Quidditch - bit like gulash without its main ingredient, paprika. And I guess JKR couldn´t be bothered to answer any one of the gazillion questions readers have been wondering about since the first book (frustrated, me? :p ( Read more... )

Thank goodness you have finished; and since you did not get spoilt, nobody was hurt either.;D

I like your SW comparison. It's somehow one of the oldest stories lines in the world of fantasy.

Tee hee, no I didn´t :) It´s very well-written, mind - but the plot is so foreseeable, it´s as if somebody else had written the last 2-3 books from the one who wrote the wonderful, inventive and really funny 4 first books.

Good point about the "oldest story line" pattern - but HP didn´t start out like that, at all, it was much mure but then it somehow became reduced to just that pattern. "Eragon" is another typical SW copycat.

"Eragon" is another typical SW copycat Thanks for telling me. I had debated to read it, now I can instead continue to enjoy The Line Upon a Wind by Noel Mostert, a tome swiv had recommended here. It is not telling us anything really new but it is well written and contains a lot of anecdotes. I am using those yellow stick-its by the dozen. So much Jack, so much Cochrane, so much Collingwood, so much dear Rose-pod...
*sighs happily*

Are you at home yet or in the next week (s)? I feel like writing a note not addressed to the Postfach.

Recently watched André Rieu with Mum (well, yes) and squeed because his concert was right in front of the Hofburg. I thought of the happy days I recently spent there with a friend who is also the most perfect guide. Jack Bear is still full of praise of his breakfast. ;D

I am more interested in the fact that Harry dies and is resurrected to defeat evil. It's been done at least twice, and some of JKR's readers might never have heard of Narnia, but some of them might know the Bible.

Also, Harry/Ginny bits had me gagging.

Oh yeah, you´re right! Don´t get me started on all the Byblical/mythical stuff! Aslan was bad enough. And a lot of the Deathly Hallows moral good vs evil syrup was unworthy of JKR. Especially since she´d scoffed so long and hard against Christian fundamentalist Pharisees damning her books - and then she went and wrote exactly along their lines.

He he, ALL the lovedoveys had me gagging - even Luna and Neville. Snape and Lily were the worst, though.

For me, the best part were the very very rare blitzes of comic relief, like Kreacher as a spotless major domo, the goat Patronus scene, and Sybil Trelawney throwing divination balls at the Death Eaters and saying: "There! Want more? I have lots more!"

*Adds the Bat's evil and accurate summary to our Deathly Shallows list*

Yesss. Never did watch Star Wars more than once - and that was a long long time ago - so cannot remember a lot of the plot points but among many things - loved your little snark on Numengard. There's Izzie thinking of Nuremberg but your explanation fits perfectly along with a whole pile of other sneaking thievery.

Could have lived with the LOTR and Narnia snatchery if not for that appalling epilogue. Is sad. It's sort of ruined the whole series for Izzie.

So now that you've finished - can share the Snark
Bestest so far is from a Ferret via The Queen of Cyberian Cats
Giving the link to the review itself does not work because the critter who wrote it did not provide links to the rest of the instalments but Irix has done all the hard work instead ;)

And then there's A Potter Parody
Izzie's favorite bit - because it's exactly what we thought when reading this scene. Such Gryffindor subtlety!

Chapter 34: The Forest Again ( ... )

Oh, that parody is priceless, thank you for sharing, Izzie!! (Deathly Shallows indeed - LOL - and isn´t Deathly Hallow an oxymoron? Unless my English is at fault again, I thought "hallowed" meant "sacred beyond death" or something like that ( ... )

Is funny. Was looking at a pack of Potter playing cards the other day - all with illustrations from the American editions. These came out some time after Goblet but before Phoenix ( ... )
