hmmm. warnings, really?

Jun 27, 2009 17:55

I think I've posted about my use of warnings, and my desire for them, ad nauseum in prior posts. (check the fandom needs an intervention tag).

That said, my bottom line is, as a reader, I choose what I choose to read. That's not to discount other people's issues, triggers, protests, or opinions. My issues with death fics are probably not on par ( Read more... )

my fandom needs an intervention

I've been really saddened by this whole thing, affected on a really deep level not by the issue itself but by the mess. That's just the right word. And some people have really, really disappointed me. People I thought were the good guys.

I know they won't care what I think, and telling them would--I believe--only add to their defensive and perceived persecuted position on high. But yeah, I think this is why I've chosen to remain on the fringes of fandom instead of right down in the heart--or lack thereof--of it.

I so do not miss this part of fandom, kitten. I really, really don't.

I've only read a tiny bit of the whole debate due to lack of time online this week. But mostly I'm just staying out of it because I have nothing to add. I feel like I'm on the outside of fandom more often than not lately because with my new job and access to LJ being cut off from work it's just impossible to keep up.

Thank you...and yeah, me too. I miss people.

I seriously am not missing fandom at the moment. Mostly because I'd like to punch a few people.

And not being able to access at work is a blessing, probably. My blood pressure has been bonkers for month without fandom. With it, I'd probably have had a stroke at some point.

I think for me I have to stay out of the debates or I feel my blood pressure rising too. I'm good with reading fic and just doing the archiving and recommending stories bit. Anything more...however lately since I started the Ebook Library and merged stories I do notice the way stories are posted can cause my blood pressure to go up. So I took a big long break and I've learned to start asking for help. :) That's actually helped a lot once I let my friends know I can't do it all myself I found more people who are also doing the same stuff I was and now we're kind of swapping fics so no one has to merge everything themselves. (it's a lifesaver for this SPN Big Bang because really 255 stories!) It's awesome but wow that's a lot to merge!

I think not having gmail and LJ is kind of a good thing because I noticed that I'd get LJ comments and I couldn't respond at all! it was so annoying. Now I have no clue what's happening until I get home. It's kind of a mixed blessing.

I always thought your warnings were spot on and completely clear. :) some people are stupid or illiterate.

after some discussion on her LJ, kathyasofia said the following, which is pretty much my thought on it:

We, as writers, are aware that some readers have real hot button issues for very valid reasons and some guidance should be provided. Also, readers are entitled to know the gist of what's in a story so they can choose when and where to read it and if it suits their mood.

We are not responsible for warning against every little detail in our stories for those with sensitive dispositions and an unwillingness to deal with anything that isn't sweetness and light.

Hmmm... and see, I think I disagree pretty much with her on this part: Also, readers are entitled to know the gist of what's in a story so they can choose when and where to read it and if it suits their mood. Yeah, no. They aren't entitled to it. Does it help a writer get an audience if they include a bit of information, hell, yes. But Readers aren't entitled to any information -- or in terms of fanfiction (as opposed to things sold or available on the open market) to anything but what a fan writer gives them. It is to the author's benefit to provide some information. However, if they don't want to take advantage of that benefit, they don't have to. Not in their own journals, websites and communities ( ... )

YES. This right here.

Obviously, I missed something. Based on what you've said, I don't think I'm sorry I missed it.
