One reason I've never wanted to be identified as a shipper in any fandom I've ever been involved in is because it always seemed to me that shippers were the most mean spirited, irrational, and devisive group around. When I said that I was ashamed of the way some Shep/Weir stuff has gone, it's quite true, and in this case I feel responsible for the behavior of that ship.
It's not fair to paint all shippers, or even all people who like one ship in particular, with one brush. Yes, there are a few bad apples out there. That doesn't mean we're a "mean spirited, irrational, and devisive group." A few people does not a ship make.
I, too, am ashamed when I see John/Elizabeth people causing trouble, because it casts us all in a very bad light. Unfortunately, those people are the ones everyone else sees, because they're sticking their noses where they don't belong. The nice ones tend to keep to their own territory and don't bother with the rest, from what I've seen.
I'm not saying that all shippers are bad people. I'm a shipper. But in my experiance in Trek, Star Wars, Babylon 5, Stargate, BSG... hell even NORMAL people shows like Law & Order, CSI, and West Wing the worst behavior comes from people pushing some relationship. It's what gives shippers as a general population a bad name.
B5? What kind of shipper craziness went on with B5? I only hung out in the fandom for the first three seasons or so. I thought the relationships on that show were handled gracefully and maturely, so it's harder for me to imagine how shipper insanity arose from that.
Or maybe shippers in general are crazy, regardless of quality and canon-ness of ship. ;) There's crazy in a good way (writing tons of pages of ship overanalysis, writing fic, etc.), there's crazy in a very bad way, and sometimes the line gets blurred between the two.
I like Teyla more, since season 1, but I can't call myself a fan of hers. I would call myself a fan of Rachel Luttrell, though (I know, that doesn't make much sense). But there are pairings I'd really like to see Teyla with because her interaction with them just brightens up the episodes.
(a) nope, but it's not because I don't love her and (b) yes, big fan! Just suck at writing her and don't really have the time to madly-fangirl both her and Elizabeth at the same time. But she's definitely my favourite character after Liz, and not too far after either. ♥
