Not all americans keep matches in the bathroom. I have matches in one of my bathrooms, but that's to light the candle I keep in there. The candle's there to smell yummy while I take a shower. There are no matches, nor candles, in my other bathroom. My parents don't have matches in either bathroom, though they have candles in both. In fact, I don't actually know anyone who keeps matches in their bathroom, nor attempts to light them after they use the toilet. If anyone wants to get rid of odors, they usually use an aerosol spray. So I wouldn't even venture to say "most" americans keep matches in their bathrooms, because no one I know does.

Lovely pic !
I was very amused by your story and reminded ao a scene in a Mike Myers movie "So I Married an Axe Muderer". Mike's sarcastic Scot father (also played by MM) yells at Mike emerging from the loo " For GOD's sake, LIGHT A MATCH !".

Downunder we just have a can of Air freshener on top of the cistern.

But what really tickled my fancy was the discussion the your sun about burning dah bra.

I am having an American visitor for April 2008. We met through our love of Jack Russell Terriers. That is my Dixie in the icon. We are inseperable !
I only met some Americans on a Contiki bus trip in 1982 and they weren,t nice ones. However the Jack Russell Yanks I have met have all been really nice.

I'll have to check out the film [I am sooooo behind with everything]

If I brought an aerosol can into the house my daughter [eldest / tree hugging/ save a whale type] would have my guts for garters. Her god parents are Australian [we all lived together - 2 Brits, 2 Aus, 2 NZ for a year way back when]

I love generalizing, especially about Americans, but I'm really only teasing.
By their dogs [and cats] shall ye know them!

They light a match to eliminate unpleasant odours that are commonplace in the room of rest.

That's not limited to States; my mother sometimes did that before the modern fresheners and it was a common suggestion in some Convenint-Tricks-At-Home books. Probably it burns off at least some of the methane but I think it mainly msdkld the unpleasant smells with the smell of a burning match.

Yes I think you're right. I love the smell of matches anyway! I dread to think what that might mean?
