Every New Beginning is Some Other Beginning's End

Jul 31, 2012 23:11

This has been a rough couple of days for everyone in my household as my brother (not the one who I've written about before, another brother who has shown what kind of person he truly is lately) has taken it upon himself to try and divide our family against my mother. This most recent episode was started on Sunday night when she informed him that ( Read more... )

You know sometimes you have to hit the bottom before you can climb back up.

The moment your brother gets violent towards your mom, call the cops. The moment he picks up a hammer again, call the cops. I'm sure you have good intentions towards your nephew and all that, but if he's willing to flip the fuck out like that and thinks violence is a solution, well .. what will he do to his child? What will he teach that child? What kind of person will your nephew grow up to be if he doesn't see consequences for that?

I don't know your brother, I don't know your family, and I certainly am no expert on how things ShouldBeDone. But if it were me, DCFS, and the 5-0 would be all over this guy. Get him to the bottom as fast as you can so he can start climbing back up faster.. and maybe build some positive relationships afterwards.

One last piece of advice: Don't trust him. Don't believe any promises. Certainly don't take him at his word. In the words of Emerson, "What you do speaks so loudly I cannot hear what you say."

I agree with Drew. I'd be more worried about the kid learning the wrong lessons by watching his dad get away with that kind of behavior that I would be worried about the kid seeing his father arrested.

I third the motion.

It's not a matter of "if" but "when" and the longer you let his fuse burn the sooner he will blow. For everyone's sake, remove this wholly destructive element as soon as humanly possible. You don't deserve it, your mother doesn't deserve it and your nephew sure as hell doesn't deserve it.

Get him the fuck out.

Get the kid out away from your brother. Nothing good can come of it.

Reading your description of this situation triggered every protective Camp Director type impulse in my body. If I was a mandated reporter I would be required by law to call children's services. I am not saying you should, but I want you to understand how bad that sort of situation is for a kid.

Use LJ to vent. Its good for that. Get it out dude.

What's worse: having the kid witness an arrest or a murder? If someone is willing to destroy a house and attack their own mother with a hammer, they are likely capable of worse. Your nephew will forget a bad incident, but he can't forget a childhood of bullshit like this. And, the child aside, you all don't deserve this, either. This isn't casual dickery, it's flat-out violence with NO NO NO NO NO justification besides ridiculous misplaced rage, and that needn't be tolerated. Throw everything you have into getting your family healthy, no matter what it takes. You're a good guy, Matt. Good luck.

Thanks guys, and trust me had I been home on Sunday night, things would have had a far different outcome. I was working that night, and that's why he decided to go off like this, he waited until anyone who would be here to protect her was gone.

I'm sorry your brother is such an asshole to you, your mom, and everyone else. I know you'll find a way to be there for your nephew.
