Shit, more Hawaii questions

Damn, I read through what everyone said and now I am even more confused. Kathy, how "commercialized" is Maui? I know that is tough to answer and it has been my one hesitation with Hawaii. I am avoiding Oahu at all costs because of this. Where is your favorite place to go in Hawaii? We had some friends who went to Lanai and loved it, so I am ( Read more... )

Have you been to Aruba? To me, Maui was like Aruba. Lots of shops, hotels, touristy areas - otherwise pretty depressed areas. All landscaping, etc. basically done up really well in the resort areas to make you feel "lush", but you can tell it's basically faux. In fairness, I think my husband was expecting the entire island to be more like the Road to Hana (which is apparently actually a rain forest). I didn't have the same expectation, so I wasn't extremely bothered by it. Oh, I should say that we didn't even make it to the Lahaina area, so I'm just speaking from seeing the Wailea area, the Road to Hana, and everything between those 2 areas and the airport. Probably not a great overview. We did have great snorkeling, our hotel was fabulous, great food, etc, though - I'd definitely go back ( ... )

PS - I don't think there are any boats/ferries, you have to take a puddle jumper as far as I know. There is a little island off of Maui that you can take a ferry to for the day and use the beach, etc. I guess it's uninhabited for the most part (?), and more "natural" (um, so the tourist literature says), but we didn't do it, so I can't say for sure. Just an aside, if you're looking for alternatives.

Wailea vs. Kaanapali? Waliea is pretty touristy and LOTS of kids and families. We prefer Kaanapali.
