What is the etiquette when you believe you may have inadvertantly made an incredibly awkward and offensive homophobic slur to thousands of Americans reading a message board when you were actually just making a light-hearted reference to the traditional delicacy of your home town (faggots and peas)?

I tend to just roll with it and call them bloody colonials at every chance, and use 'bloody' and 'bugger' to amuse them.
