I'm not sure what's missing but it's a bit clunky right now. The elements - both shapes and materials - don't seem to be working well together like in your usual pieces, so its lacking cohesion and elegance both.
I wonder whether this one will ever work? Sometimes - like in photography - perhaps you have to admit defeat, put it aside and start on another subject.
I think that armature is a theme worth exploring. It kind of fits. However . .
I'm looking at this again (and again) and I'm struck now by the fact that the elements that work least well with the rest are likely the ones you like best - namely the skull at the top and the dangly bits at the bottom. The central part works extremely well, I think.
It might be interesting to reserve the skull for another piece and explore some lateral rather than the current vertical dimensions perhaps . . . .
I love it so far, so don't feel it's a case of admitting defeat, but it doesn't feel quite done to me, either. It feels like.. you know how when you put fabric together, you use multiple prints, and it's best to have a variety of scales - like a solid, a small scale, medium, and a large scale, so that it balances? And you do the same with flower-arranging too, you need greens, small flowers like baby's breath, large focal flowers, and medium ones too. I think you've mostly very neutral and large pieces, but not so much small and medium. I'd also like to see another pop of colour up higher in the piece, maybe near the doll's chest/throat/torso, or maybe some sort of finer filigree type framing around the face?
Love the skull and the caged doll.. I can't presume to tell someone what to add or remove from their artwork...I do understand the nagging feeling when something says a piece either isn't finished or isn't quite right...but on mine, I have usually found that just living with it over time will somehow give you the answer.....
...for me, it just presents a recognizable image of innocence lost or a sad childhood and being in a cage adds even more dimensions to those thoughts and feelings.
Glad Tricia came to your rescue and helped you see it as finished. (Always a good feeling)
Hmmm. I like it! The only thing I might suggest - and this may be because I am recalling your past assemblages - but it's pretty monochromatic. Maybe drill holes through the top edge of the wing shapes and dangle something from them that is rusty? Or drill holes around all the edges and sort of weave something over the top of the wings? Overall I really like it - I think the broken girl in the cage is awesome! :)
