Why I will never buy from Kiehls.

Dear Kiehls,

Your customer service at the Ste-Catherine, Montreal location is made of utter, absolute FAIL. First I get harassed with "help" until I just hand over items I'm holding to your service rep so that she'll go away (because otherwise of course I was going to run out and steal everything I could in the process of course!) and then when I' ( Read more... )

This is I don't like working retail. We had this big, special meeting devoted to giving good customer service and it's all a bunch of crap. I had to do some training and a big part of what it says to do to make the store inviting for customers is not done. I feel helpess sometimes; I want to help people, but I'm not given the right training and tools to do so. Also, I refuse to follow shoppers around the store. If they tell me they're "just looking" I back away. I don't want anyone bugging me when I shop, and I think most people feel the same way. Yes, I greet all customers and ask if they need help, but I will not be a pushy salesperson and I'm not going to stalk people as they try out various fitness machines. Also we never seem to have enough people on staff and I feel bad when I have to rush to the register because the area is missing a cashier. Sure, people shouldn't have to wait, but I'm not even supposed to be manning the cash register kiosk. I work in tools, fitness, and lawd and garden but I have to act as a cashier ( ... )

I was in retail for ten years, and rarely if ever had complaints. In fact, most of the time, I'd get complimented - no training, I just did my best to treat people as I imagined I'd like to be treated. And if they were rude I'd just be neutral/not waste energy, and save the cheerful for those who were worth it.

I cannot tell you how much I love people who let me shop and let me go to them to ask for help. SO MUCH.

When I used to work cash, I'd just politely apologize to people when they had to wait then go on serving them (all in one go, so they can't start sniping but still get the basic apology). As a customer, I always make a point of telling a clark it's ok and I'm not rushed, when they look stressed or worried.

I dunno. It's just - treat people like people, damn it. Sales reps/clerks aren't slaves. And unsurprisingly, people like being smiled at and asked how their day goes even when they're at the cash and you're the client. (D'uh, I add!)
