I can't imagine what it would be like to wear a brace for eighteen years! How horrible! But I also find it utterly inexplicable - and unacceptable - that you were never even told why it was there, and why no dentist took the initiative to remove it. (I know it would have been the first thing my dentist would have done on seeing me for the first time - he doesn't believe in unnecessary work or artificial aids).
It really was a dreadful thing. My orthodontist back in the day annoyed me, but we didn't have a lot of options in town, so it was what it was. But yeah - I would always get vague "well, it's holding those teeth straight" answers, and when I'd point out that those teeth were always straight - they said "well, it's there for a reason."
The dentist *today* said that the reason she understands it was there initially was because the teeth next to the brace on either side had been moved so far during my years of braces (a full molar width, as I'd had them pulled on each side), so she believed the brace was there to hold the front teeth in place in case the teeth in back started to drift.
THAT made sense to me.
And she warned me I may have some tooth movement with it off -but she agreed - the teeth behind my front six were straight and didn't appear to have moved. Take the dumb thing out.

Glad it's gone!

PS: Never mind! I just read your comment explaining the rationale for the thing.
