Hell no, and this is the main argument I have to people I know who say they won't vote because they feel both candidates for presidency won't actually fix anything. I just tell them they need to go vote because of Prop 8, it is the civil rights of our time and one of the most important things we as californians can vote on (since its pretty obvious who california will give its electoral votes to)

The semantic debate is just a cover. People are using WORDS to justify HATE; you can't take the words away because then you expose the guilty, horrifying underbelly of the matter. After all, "civil union" is the new "separate but equal".

Kathy, I agree with the basis of what you're saying. Unfortunately, the term, "marriage" has a rich history of hundreds of years of legal and thousands of years of cultural legitimacy backing it up. I can't see any new term being able to equal that.
Plus, Prop 8 doesn't give any legal definition to civil union. All it does is prohibit marriage from being used as a term to describe a union between a same-sex couple. And because there is no legitimacy to the term "civil union" at this time, it leaves same-sex couples out to dry.
