Christmas traditions

It seems like most everyone is having a small Christmas this year. Our family is going to join that growing group. We've had a tough year financially, so not many people are getting gifts from us. In fact, if it weren't for Grandparents, our girls would not be getting many gifts at all. Instead, we're going to focus on continuing traditions ( Read more... )

Like Meesch's family, we always had Santa fill our stockings, even after we no longer believed in Santa. These days, several people will (usually) remember to get a little something for everybody's stocking, ensuring a mini-wealth of stocking goodies. Some of you may remember my wailing and gnashing of teeth in the past when no Santa remembered to fill my stocking. I expect Santa will remember this year, or s/he will never hear the end of it.

My stocking usually got a green piece of paper or two (maybe $20) some candy, a few little trinkets and maybe jewelry of the inexpensive variety. My friend Renee told me she would always get fancy toothbrushes, floss, travel samples and so on in her stocking. I like that idea, especially for my husband, who has such excellent dental hygiene habits (compared to mine).

I'm going to try and soak up some of your Christmas spirit. Besides being stone-cold broke this year, I'm also coming off of three years' worth of Christmases that left me burnt out, depressed, and resentful. Woe is me. Blah blah.

Anyway, I appreciated your post about focusing on the good, the magical, and the family-unifying. I hope you have a snowflakey, gingerbread-scented, ribbony, red-velvety sort of holiday with your sweet, wonderful family.

I'm trying my best to have holiday spirit for Christmas because I totally blew off Halloween and I was depressed at Thanksgiving (missing family). I didn't want this year to be a total holiday bust so I'm going Christmas crazy with Erin!
