Living in New York...

Yesterday, I noticed cones in front of my house. Today, I see what looks like a truck for people to work out of. I think to myself "hooray, they have finally sold the abandoned house next door, and the annoying squatters will be gone." No, no, I wasn't that lucky. They are filming an episode of Law & Order: SVU right in front of my house. The actor ( Read more... )

"Oh, nobody lives there - you can burn that place if you want to."

That's really cool, though. You'll have to start watching it now, just to see your house! They couldn't give you a walk-on part?

Right, at first, I felt sorry for these people because they have no home, but at the same time, they are most likely involved in selling drugs if they are not also on drugs themselves.

It's really annoying having people yelling at 3 a.m. about how they are going to go out and make some money. I mean, what do people do at 3 am for work anyway? Drugs or the sex trade. And although it may be sad that they are in the state that they are in, I don't want them in my neighborhood, except maybe at a shelter, and certainly not next door with who knows who coming and going.

That's definitely not something I'd want to live next to, either. The questions that come to mind are:

Is there some charity that would get involved and get them cleaned up and moved on, or would that merely leave vacancies for new druggies to move in?

Someone must own this place; why aren't they doing something? If it's (officially) unoccupied, then surely they have a duty to make sure it's well and truly boarded up. In that fucked-up legal system, the squatters could probably sue if they stubbed their toes; certainly your landlord should be able to sue the owner for the dent in the value of your place.

What about the police, if it's a hotbed of drugs and prostitution? Maybe they can force the property owner to do something. At the very least, they should be able to tell you someone who can help.

"Someone must own this place"

They do, it's merely an investment property. They currently have it up for sale. My landlord is suing them for neglecting their property and bringing down the value of his.

"Is there some charity that would get involved and get them cleaned up and moved on, or would that merely leave vacancies for new druggies to move in?"

I don't even know that they really have the motivation to change. And if they don't have the motivation, what good is that going to do. I suppose I could look into it.

Sadly, they're gone. It was a one night filming occasion. My brother suggested I get an autograph too, but I mean, what was I going to do with it?

That's totally hot. SVU is the best L&O. I love Christopher Meloni. He is awesome as Gene in Wet Hot. Also, who doesn't love Ice T. The guy had a song about killing cops and now he plays one on TV. Love it.

*wibbles all over you* Ooo, I would have loved to meet him! B.D. Wong spoke at my school during an Asian American/Pan American Awareness festival; it was very neat to hear him speak.
