Still no weight loss, but...

May 06, 2013 16:55

So I am STILL at 228 (boo!)... But, I got home from the doctors today with some relatively good news. My A1c (long term blood sugar) is down 5 points. In January it was a little over 13. Today (well, the blood tests were last Wednesday, but yeah...) it was 8.5. Normal is between 6 and 7. So yeah. AND my bad cholesterol (whichever that one is) is ( Read more... )

All of that is excellent news, aside from the weight, which is not precisely -terrible- news, since you also didn't /gain/ either. Did she give you any suggestions about what you could do about that, or maybe suggest a nutritionalist that could make those suggestions?

No... but she is super focused on numbers other than my weight... I am using 2 different programs (one online and one in my phone) to track both calories (foods consumed) and exercise (and steps per day...) I have been to the nutritionist any number of times, so I do actually KNOW what I should be cutting out or whatever, but the simple fact is that I have created an imbalance of calories in to calories out (in favor of out) and SHOULD be dropping pounds right now... I could be "bulking up" because of the increased exercise, and therefore gaining muscle at the same rate I am dropping fat, but I am not seeing that big an inches loss (although there is SOME inch loss)... The things that are physically bugging me are simply NOT her focus as a medical professional...

Interesting - my experience with medical professionals has been that they focus entirely on weight to the exclusion of other things, so I have to say I'm a bit relieved. I'd agree that your other numbers are ultimately far more important than your weight, but I'm still sympathetic that it's bugging you, and thought it might be helpful if she'd offered suggestions on that.

I think I'm misunderstanding the latter part though - you're eating less calories than you're expending, so you should be losing weight, but you're not - is that right? Hmm. How long as it been? The 'putting on muscle/losing fat' thing should eventually balance out, if that is what it is. Could it be a water retention thing - are you eating a bunch of salt? (I know, man, am I one to talk.)

Yes... I am eating less calories than I am expending, according to every measurement I can find/use. My BMR (basal metabolic rate), is at approximately 2000 calories per day, based on my weight. That is the number of calories I need just to live, basically. Not to do anything else, not counting exercise or anything. I am supposed to eat about 2000 calories a day to maintain homeostasis. I am currently eating between 1400 and 1800 (more on a bad day or whatever, and less on some days). In addition, I have increased my exercise to a caloric burn level of approximately 200 to 300 calories a day in cardio based exercise (I also have strength and agility/flexibility exercises, but those burn way less calories). So what I have right now is an approximate deficit of between 2800 and 5600 calories per week. A deficit of 3500 calories should equal 1 pound. I do not believe I am retaining 28 pounds worth of water. So yeah... It is kind of fucked up...

wow, huh. And the dr wasn't at all concerned about that? When do you see them next time?
