Totally linked to this for you, Megan. I have to admit I just sort of check reality at the door when I step into Meyers' world because otherwise I'd be going "WTF?" at every turn. And by that I mean like, a thousand more times than I do, so I'd never considered the period aspect of it all. But then we are dealing with a woman who turned the whole not drinking human blood thing into a metaphor for not having sex before marriage somehow. It's a logic leap I don't quite follow myself.
As for the second question? I'm going to go with the implied superhuman willpower to NOT think about killing Bella all the time. He did say in the book that the more he's around her the easier it is not to think about, and if he's away from her for any extended period he has to start from scratch. And god, why do I even remember that?
Oh, and let's not forget that Carlise is referred to as being pretty much immune to the smell of blood at some point. Adds weight to the just talking themselves into ignoring it somehow theory.
As leeshy_s said, Smeyer has "answered" this by saying that period blood is dead blood, and therefore it does not create the same reaction in vampires, but Bella was too embarrassed to ask him about it which is why it was never brought up in the books.
And vampires are supposed to have blood lust, generally, but from what I understand it can be trained out of them with enough discipline -- see Jasper trying really hard when he meets Bella, or I believe Carlisle says, because he works in a hospital, he barely even notices a desire for blood now.
Y'know, as you mention it, I don't think I've ever seen a vampire book (and I've read a lot, although I'm still managing to successfully avoid Twilight, although I succumbed and started reading Charlaine Harris' Sookie Stackhouse novels) that deals with that. They just kind of ignore it. I mean, a lot have newish vampires that get lose control before they learn how to deal with it if there's someone bleeding nearby. Howcome there's not constant massacres of women on their periods??
Just to reiterate what a few have already said, Meyer said period blood is "dead blood" so it doesn't have the same allure as "real blood." I guess it's like comparing a raw steak to one that's well done ... depending on your tastes. Or something, lol. Cause I gag when I see raw meat, but if I smell a well cooked steak? OMG, DROOL!!!
And I assume that the Cullens have mastered some kind of meditation as far as their blood lust goes. Carlisle is a doctor and is basically immune to the sight and smell of it now and that always struck me as believable because "regular people" do the same thing, meaning they train themselves to resist temptation, y'know?

I was thinking the newer ones that really didn't have as much control, like Jasper.
Thanks for the input!
