I will most likely be repeating myself on a lot of this, but the more reading I've done the more I've come to like the Christian god. First, the bible probably should not be taken word-for-word literally because it was written by people who make mistakes and, of course, have a bias towards something (converting people, enforcing laws, making god look a certain way). But if you look at the bible as experiences people have had, then you can kind of put together a picture of god, I think. Second, the bible and every person and every book about god try to make him/her/it like us: human. Which god isn't. There aren't words in our languages that can describe god. The book I read talks about how ridiculous it is when people say that sins hurt god because god cannot be hurt, if god is, by their definition, perfect. God cannot weep or smile or laugh or get angry because god doesn't feel emotions like we do. God is god, not human. And, to me, that has, at the same time, been the most helpful and the most confusing
