And can I blame this on my father? He did the best he could, for me.

Yes, so, I have begun to wonder why both me and my father have been forced to live these lifes. Cursed with a mental condition known as manic depression which has driven him crazy and leads me tottering on a very thin line

My son (who will be 13) was diagnosed 3 yrs. ago. We have been on more than 20 med. combinations. No one ever told me all my relatives on my mothers side had it, it makes you think. I fear for my son- he has a long hard road in front of him. He was suicidal at 10 yrs. of age. I curse god for doing this to him.He asks me why did this happen to him. What can I tell him, I don't know, I just say if he wasn't strong enough to deal with it then he wouldn't have been dealt this deck.I don't really believe that but I hope its true

First off, get him off every single med. Tell him his mind is a double bladed sword, as deadly as it can be for him, it can be just as useful. The mind of a manic depressive can be tattered, torn, and over all blank. Unless the mind learns how to use the mind to its advantage. He can be an awesome multi-tasker, a great leader, and a list of other things. He just has to turn his handicap into motivation and figure out how to cope with the blackness of his mind.

These are very wise words. A new way to approach the rough spots, the fits of rage, anger and despair that hit sometimes daily. We stopped everything but .5mg abilify when the depakote stopped working almost 5 months ago; two weeks ago we had to go back on lamactil but in 3 days he was Hypomanic,{which is worse than any PMS I EVER had!!} So now we are med free but for the abilify and will just deal w/ the raunch.
Thanks for the insight he will hear it when it hits again..one question.....Do you take your own advice?

I did want to say that meds. can be a lifesaver for many. They have been helpful for us but never seem to work for more than 4 or 5 months. We have pretty much ran out of options except for lithium which I'm not ready to do.Some people get lucky with meds. some do not. The problem is more research is needed, they need to pinpoint which part of the brain is affected by each drug and more importantly, pinpoint in an individual person what is the cause. There are many different things going on in your brain. Bipolar is more a general description of symptoms with some triggers known but not all, thats why some people react to a certain drug in a positive way and some do not;)
