any type of online fandom like this is going to have drama and cruel, mean people. i have been to one doll meet in my life, and that's because i had never seen any BJD in person besides my own Jillian and wanted to see some more, and plus they were having a pannel explaining the history of BJDs and I thought it would be fun. But I felt completely left out and disconnected from everyone there. 80% of them were in cosplay and that's really not my cup of tea, and I had no one to talk to. I want to try to go to another one when the opportunity comes, but I am not sure it will happen.
What I really want is an opportunity to meet some of my online friends offline. :) Like, I would die if I saw Jillian IRL. <3 Seeing other dolls is fun! To me, most dolls look better in person than in photographs. I've been to hmmm, about 4 or 5 doll meets and decided it wasn't something that I enjoyed.
I can't say that I've seen anyone in this fandom who's gotten more shit than you, except maybe Aimee. I know backing out must be harder for you than it is to me, since you've got a reputation and lots of connections with people. I hope that you can find happiness. Because when the dolls start making you unhappy, it makes no sense why you're doing it.
^_^ It makes me happy to see others who think the same as me about owning dolls. I always have this underlying feeling that I will become hated because I'm "abusing" the dolls or something...the number of people who use the statement "so-and-so needs their dolls taken away", even semi-seriously, scare me. XD
I actually started a forum at http://dollystreet.7.forumer.com/ but one thing I've run into is that you still get shit from the fandom. Even with only 26 members and 94 posts. I got a PM from someone who had a forumer BJD with the the same free style sheet that is included with forumer, asking me to change it. *headdesk* But actually, I really like the userbase and atmosphere, even if it's not active. <3
I've tossed around the idea of attending a meet-up every now and then, but I realized I'm perfectly happy enjoying my dolls by myself. The two-faced nature of the fandom really does bother me a lot, and the fact that so many people in the fandom seem SO out of touch with reality really scares me.
I've also noticed that while generally helpful and such, a lot of people tend to be "cliquey" with their dolls. God forbid I ever go to a meeting and have to deal with cliques.
They can be fun as well, even though they end up being too creepy for me overall. I really enjoyed seeing a movie and going out to eat with a group of people, and making friends. Which makes me realize I probably enjoy the socialization more than the dolls!
But you know, I know what you mean about some members being out of touch with reality. All BJD, all the time doesn't interest me...Well, I can deal with it on the internet, but seeing it offline was very scary!
Also, one thing I've noticed is that cliqueyness happens no matter what your age (office politics? XD), but the BJD fandom seems to be more like the "younger" kind of cliques than the older ones. I realize that many of the userbase is around 16, but I've seen people in their 30's acting the same way. Brr.
I have little use for the vast majority of people in the doll fandom -- at least as I see them behaving online. I'm sure in real life many of them are sane, kind individuals, but many of them have failed to let that shine through when they talk on the forums. It makes me uncomfortable, and while I would love to say I have the time to get to know each and every individual on a personal basis to discover her good side, at some point one just has to go with one's first impression.
That impression, unfortunately, is in most cases not so hot.
Also: the BJD fandom is so large, there's no way one could take the time to understand everyone as an individual. Well...unless you had a lot of free time! XD The best you can do is try and be patient with people, and ignore the ones that you can't connect with.
