Melon Field 3 [Ammie]

Jul 08, 2008 23:47

On the far side of the island, quite a distance west from the town, there is a melon field. It lies between the edge of the forest and Memento Eden's largest lake, basking in the open sun. On occasion, water fowl waddle nearby, though the influx of visitors to the field seems to have scared them off. The soil nearby goes from hearty to moist and ( Read more... )

"Wow," said Fuuta aloud as he took in the sight of the glorious melon field. There were people working on all sorts of melons, and he gladly set his claim on the fourth green melon: it seemed a bit more normal than the others, that's for sure.

He'd heard it reacted to water, and there was a lake just right there, so... maybe he should just stick it in? Did melons float, or what?

He decided not to do that first, instead, he picked up the melon - it was lighter than it looked! - and checked it for any odd spots or inequalities.

The melon looked pretty normal, with all the imperfect charm of a fruit.

Okay, so, nothing too out of the ordinary. And there had been more than person who'd said water had worked, so, probability was likely in his favor. Fuuta tentatively picked the melon up and set it at the lake's edge. "Sorry about this," he whispered softly, before feeling stupid for talking to a melon. Then again, it was kind of sentient, so maybe it was hearing him.

He pushed the melon into the lake and waited to see if anything would happen.

The melon rolled into the lake, wobbling slightly, sending little ripples across the surface of the water. Perhaps it was indeed sentient, despite being... well... a melon.

He watched to see if the melon would do anything further, or if he was on the wrong track. After all, some people had specified what kind of water they'd used - soapy water, ice water, so on and so forth. Maybe freshwater wasn't good enough? He'd have to retrieve it before it floated too far off anyways.

Just to see if it would help, he gave the melon his best pleading face. If it could hear and didn't have ears, maybe it could see without eyes.

What a cute face. Too bad it didn't seem to be acknowledged.

After a few moments, the wobbling slowly stopped, and the melon floated on the still water.

That was... anticlimactic. Maybe he was supposed to wait it out? He'd pause for about five minutes; if nothing happened, he'd try something new.

The melon bobbed peacefully on the waves.

After retrieving the melon from the lake, he dragged it back to the Apartments, where he a) gave it an ice water bath, b) put it in boiling water, c) put it in soapy water, d) doused it in salt water (you know that nasty stuff some parents like to make you wash your teeth with before you say 'No, that's gross.'), e) then tried it in sugar water just for good measure, f) washed it again, to get the nasty water solutions off, and g) brought it back to the lake and put it in the lake again.

As it was put in boiling water, the melon abruptly exploded, sending flecks of hot water and melon juice all over Fuuta's room!

((2% for Fuuta!))
