Leprecon 37 Con Report

May 08, 2011 22:57

Chris and I spent this weekend at Leprecon in Phoenix, where once again, Arizona fandom has proven to be a mixed bag. (I blogged about earlier experiences back in July 2009). Although there were a few shiny, happy moments, Arizona fandom did not perform well when given a chance to redeem itself ( Read more... )

I'm sorry you feel left out of the Phoenix filk community. From my experience, we are dwindling in size and energy and are very poorly organized, but would love to have more people participate ( ... )

You are one of the people that welcomed me, so let me say "thanks" for that! I enjoyed hearing you at the house filk, and I wish I had been able to attend your concert.

See my answer to Mark's comment below for more substantive response.

I'm sorry to hear that our Phoenix filk didn't lead to more involvement with the filkers there. If there are no emails being sent to anyone, how do people hear about the house filks?

Maybe the two small cons could try alternating years?

I really, really wish all programming chairs would send out an email to all panelists on a panel and ask them to coordinate, and yes, having the emails that handy would help. Some panel members still wouldn't bother, but I tend to remember those and avoid future panels they moderate. When I've moderated and contacted people in advance, they seem surprised. I wouldn't know any other way to do it.

Even if the house filk didn't get me plugged into the full Phoenix filk community, I did make a few nice connections, so it was definitely worth it. And as to how people hear about filks without email notices - that's an excellent question!

You and Jennifer are two of the people who have been very welcoming, and I appreciate that.

And actually, I didn't know there were any filkers in Tucson other than Jenn A. and myself. So that's news!

As I said in the main post, I'm not going to point fingers, but a couple of people have repeatedly offered to send me notices of the phoenix house filks, and said notices never arrived - so it wasn't just a mailing list issue.

I understand cons being less than filk friendly (although scheduling issues that keep the Music GoH out of open filking is a bit extreme), but my problem is I don't get to filk very often, and it's frustrating when a possible chance peters out.

But I did enjoy hearing your stuff!

There is a Phoenix Filk circle web page available and notices of House filks can be posted there, *if* someone sends me the information.

You're always welcome in Atlanta, for GaFilk, a housefilk, or anything else you care to show up for. You can stay with us, or the local filk palace [with the Profesora & the Lt. Col.] has lots of rooms & hospitable hosts.
