If it's a pirated copy of XP or 2000 Windows update will tend to get kind of picky and not let you download things like language packs. So friends can't help you downgrade so much anymore. You'd have to call Microsoft if the license is being fully transferred, though I've heard that's not as big of an ordeal as it could be.

If you're looking for a desktop system, recall that I work at a shop that builds such. We build to order, use high-quality components, stand behind our work, and are nice to our friends in pricing. (And yes, we use XP.)

If you're looking for a laptop, I second Andy's recommendation of Dell. I have one, Nick has one, Teresa has one...they're good quality, not expensive (especially if you shop the sales), and can be gotten with XP in many cases.

In the meantime, if you've got Internet, you should at least be able to download Service Pack 2 for XP. In fact, Windows Update should be poking at you to do so....

a few things...
1) the OS you have may not be licensed, causing your first issue.
2) Dell is offering to sell XP until 2011 (they're trying hard to).
3) I do need a guinea pig for XP SP3, and it's supposed to be a much faster OS
4) friends who are computer savvy can always help you out (hi!)
