[ Look, there was an explosion and child service had their hands full and most of the Avengers are elsewhere and somehow, Rhodey got stuck with a baby.

Please tell him you're better with children than he is, because he's kind of afraid he might drop her or-- something. ]

[He's never actually handled a kid before but he might be better at it than Rhodey. So he watches him for a moment.]

Give her here.

Yeah, okay. [ It's not that Rhodey is awful at it, just very awkward. But he does hand her over, carefully, like she might break. Well, she might, what does he know. ]

You have any experience with this?

[Steve just knows what he's read or what he's seen done. Which is why when he holds her, her head gets supported.]

Not really.

That's helpful. [ You're Captain America, man. Aren't you supposed to be good at everything? But there's no judgment in Rhodey's voice, only a good bit of resignation. A baby. He swears his life was never this strange before. ]

[He was a normal every day scrawny kid before he was Captain America. He looks over toward the other man.] So how did you end up with her?

[ Rhodey's looking at Steve, really looking. Seeing him with a baby in his arms is-- kind of cute, actually. Maybe Rhodey should take a picture and not show it to Tony, that would drive the guy mad. ] Explosion in an orphanage [ and who the hell blows up an orphanage, that's a whole new level of supervillain-y there, but really, it was just guys in a war zone and sometimes, sometimes he hates his job a little ] and she had nowhere else to go.

[Those eyes look toward the other man and he frowns before looking down at the little one in his arms.] So what're you going to do with her?

Don't know. [ Jesus, Rhodey hadn't thought that far. ] But I couldn't just leave her there.

You need to figure out what you're going to do with her. [Simple and to the point.] Are you going to settle down and take care of her?

[awarmachine]

Yeah, I don't think so. [ But he'll step a little closer and run a finger over the baby's back, carefully. ]

You need to find a home for her then.

You look kinda cozy with her.

Look at what I do though. [That actually kind of worries him. He couldn't be an Avenger AND take care of a kid. Now could he?]

[ Good lord he was kidding Steve. ] Guess I'll just call child services.

[Yeah well he wasn't unfortunately.] Will that give her a chance to grow up and just be a kid? [He's heard some stories and not everything good.]
