and its a 6! need_some_rope December 31 2011, 06:55:57 UTC
While it wasn't the most usual thing for Murphy to be gone out without Connor for so long and him not to know where he was, it wasn't so unusual that it was a reason to worry either. They weren't both still tied to their Ma's apron strings, after all.

Worrying, he was though. That uncomfortable kind of unease where you just know that you're being silly and irrational, but you can't help wonder; what if you're right?

Opening another can of beer, he tried to distract himself, channel hopping on the tv, all the time focused on the door and the telephone.

It was a rough season for them both. They had been living by themselves for a long time now, their Ma had taught them to be fairly independant from a long time ago.

But being too independant from each other was something they had never been good at, and this whole issue regarding hiding this second job from his brother had made Murphy feel utterly miserable for the past week. Physically, even. It was not a surprise that he had fallen ill, it probably didn't even have anything to do with the many hours he worked in this aside job.

His new coworkes got worried though, seeing he was feverish and simply not able to keep on going. After much proding, they managed to make the man talk, give them a phone number. Someone they could call to come pick and look after Murphy.

Murph' was so weak he didn't even thing of giving them Rocco's number...

The ring of the phone was sudden and loud and it made Connor jump even though he'd been staring at it. It was like it knew he'd been willing it to ring. He threw himself from one end of the couch to the other and grabbed the receiver.

"Aye? Hello?"

The voice on the other end of the phone clearly wasn't Murphy and that both disappointed him and worried him more. The feeling in his chest got heavier and tighter as they started to tell him that they were calling about his brother.

It clearly was an illegal job. No one works in construction at night, after all. But it paid. And it also meant that they had to truly worked their asses off and that they were all pushed to work even harder.

Murphy wasn't sure if he was grateful of the fact that his coworkers were good people, wanted to make sure he was fine. Now that he was feeling a bit more like himself, trying to get back to his feet, he hated the fact that they were easily holding him back. He felt useless. Weak. And even worse, he'd heard his brother was coming to pick him up.

Like a damn child he felt. Here he was trying to look after Connor and the ejit is on his way to pick him up.

Like a damn fucking child.

Connor didn't understand. What was Murphy doing on some construction site at night? Why was he sick there, and why did these people talk like they knew his brother?

It didn't matter though. Murphy needed him and he was throwing on his coat and searching between the cushions of the couch for enough change to pay for the cab. The car couldn't move fast enough as they drove to the address he'd been given. It wasn't often that he wished that they could afford to get mobile phones, but at this moment Murphy never felt further away from him and more in need.

When he got there he told the driver to wait and rushed onto the site to look for his twin.

He had barey any time to wash his mouth when one of the lads told him his brother was here.

Murphy wished he'd had a glass of water to wash his mouth, but he had caused enough trouble and wouldn't ask for any more favours. Instead, he simply spat into the bucket he had been clinging on to, and forced himself to get back to his feet.

He was dizy, one of the men had to come help him hold his balance. Everything sounded louder around him.

"Murph!" Connor broke into a jog as he get a first glimpse of this twin. Soon he was jostling past the strangers holding him up and ducking to put his brother's arm over his own shoulder.

Only he was going to look after his brother!

"What happened?"

Murphy inhaled and exhaled through his nose. His breath was slow but loud, almost a task, it seemed. His whole body ached, he couldn't help but groan as Connor pulled him in, a bit too roughly.

"Nothin'." Shaking his head, Murphy kept his eyes shut. His brother out of this.

His coworkers though, they all seemed to want to give explanations or their opinions at the same time.

"Don't look like nothin'." Connor scowled, getting a whiff of the sickly acid on his brother's breath as he spoke.

Before he could question him further though, suddenly he was getting overwhelmed by people forcing their opinions at him.

"Who the fuck are all these people, Murph?"

He was forcing himself to stand, Murphy even tried his best to pull Connor away from the group, get him to walk away and spare himself from the embarrassing moment. But his legs were too weak, hiw whole body was.

"No one. Let's go already."

If Murphy had been in better shape, Connor would have pushed harder. Murphy was clearly hiding things from him here, it didn't take a genius to see that. But he was more worried about how his twin trembled against his body, his whole weight leaning against him and pulling him down. He was fighting hard to stand and Connor could question him later.

"Okay." He quickly thanked the guys around him for calling, as much as away to get them to back off as a true pleasantry, and lead his twin to the waiting cab.

Resting his head on Connor's shoulder, Murphy could feel the little strenght he had left leaving him. He was tripping on his own feet, slipping off Connor's hold.

He almost loses his conscience on the way to the taxi a couple of times. The second his twin settled him inside the car Murphy passed out.

His arm wrapped firmly around his brothers waist, he keeps him walking. He fists his shirt and holds on to him, even when he trips, until he can haul him into the back of the cab, as gently as possible.

Leaning over him, he fastens his belt before sliding in the other side of the car and sitting in the middle so he can rest his twin's head against his shoulder.

"We're goin' home, Murph." He isn't sure that he can hear him though.

He believes his brother is talking to him, but Murphy is so exhausted he can't even tell apart if he's awake or dreaming. He's in that very thin line between both, slipping away as he comfortably leans against the familiar warmth of his brother.

With flushed skin, he starts trembling as the sweat turns his t-shirt into a wet, cold blanket. He whines, shifting in his sleep to try and slip under his brother, the same way he does whenever they share a bed in a particularly cold night.

Feeling the way his twin trembles against him, Connor tries to lean against him, wrapping him with his arm and body as much as he can. He asks the driver to wind up his window and turn the heating up, and although the man grumbles, even he can see how ill Murphy is and does as he's asked.

When they get to their building Connor gives him a little bit extra, more than he can really afford, to show his thanks.

"Murph... Hey... Murph. C'mon now, we have to go inside..."

It takes a bit more of proding, with Murphy going back to sleep even after his brother had got his attention. But at the end, he manages to put enough will power to stay awake, give Connor a slow nod and push himself away from the seat that feels even more comfortable than any bed will, at the moment at least.

His whole body aches, and so does his ego. He tries his best to get out of the cab by himself, but his legs feel as if they had melted, and he can't really trust them.
